Airtel Broadband: From must get to must avoid

I have been a big fan of Airtel Broadband services for years now. It was the first ISP I truly liked after struggling with cable internet service providers. And it was the reason I migrated from Chandigarh to Gurgaon. Sify Broadband was a pain to deal with and Airtel was almost magical in comparison.

Things have however changed a lot in the last couple of months. The introduction of Fair Usage Policy has pretty much resulted in disappearance of all the goodwill generated by the its customer base for the company.

Bijli Board Hai Hai

Hmm. So I started sleeping during the day time so that I could work peacefully during the nights. Apparently, the power department in gurgaon has a problem with that too as the whole night; power was out at my place. Whenever it came, the voltage was hovering at around 30-40 volts which is only good to screw up the electronic devices.

I am posting this post out of frustration from a friend’s place sitting in front of an Air Conditioner. However, he is not a lucky chap himself. He has got Sify Broadband as his ISP and the net here sucks like shit.

Funny world. Shitness never stops following you!

Airtel reminding me of Sify Broadband Days!

I had never thought that I would say this. Nevertheless, Airtel is actually reminding me days spent using the oh-so-awesome Sify Broadband connection. If speeds were not bad the entire last night, they are oh-so-pathetic at around 9:20 am. Looks like offices and cyber cafés running on Airtel are back online squeezing the bandwidth, which should have been sufficient with Bharti’s Airtel considering they have their own international gateway.

The Airtel Broadband speed checker shows that I am getting 35kbps when I should be getting between 128kbps-256kbps. The lowest they give on the package I have is around 64kbps as per a statement made by a friend on the Broadband Forum. Goodness gracious me.

The more important point. If I had to move from Chandigarh to Gurgaon to get rid of Sify Broadband, where do I move now to get decent broadband connectivity again? I doubt, there is any ISP here in India, which is providing decent services now that Airtel has lost its charm. Even more interesting is the fact that I am waiting for the Airtel Broadband DNS servers to get updated (I moved a site to a new server) since the last 4 hours. No use. Absolutely no use.

Sucky Airtel Broadband

I have been on Airtel Broadband ever since I moved to Gurgaon in December 2004. It has been a good experience on Airtel. Especially when I compare it to Sify Broadband. However, the last month has been a revelation.

The company announced double speeds at night scheme. However, when I check it at my place, I find it hard to believe if that actually is happening at my place. The best I get during the daytime is around 17 KBps when I should be getting around 32 KBps. At night, the speed improves to around 25 KBps when I should technically be getting 64 KBps.

A little loss in delivery of the speed is acceptable to me. But less than half of the speeds, I should be getting? Not good. Maybe I should start Blogging on my ongoing experiences with Airtel Broadband as I did it with Sify. Or maybe I should just harass the customer care people who have the usual suggestions… Scan for viruses/worms, clean cache, restart, reinstall. What crap?

I do not need their crappy online bandwidth tester when I can see what speeds I am getting on my download manager. And I do not need to listen to stupid comments that maybe my PC is infected with a worm, which is eating all my bandwidth. I am a smart enough guy to know that speeds suck from their side and they are doing nothing about it.

Maybe instead of spending money on keeping Shah Rukh Khan advertising for them, they can invest more in keeping their existing customers happy. Instead, I get spam calls on my Airtel telephone in the middle of the night telling me about their new caller tunes feature which would enable me to let the people calling me listen to the latest Emraan Hashmi starrer movie’s song.
