Airtel EDGE went down again today

I thought it was a coverage problem at my place but looking at Twitter and other places, I can safely say that airtel EDGE went down in some parts of Delhi NCR region.

I am not sure if it is back now because my phone is currently connected to the web through Wi-Fi. But this is the second time in the last couple of months that I have noticed airtel network disappearing on me.

Mobile number portability is an option with me. Vodafone might be an option worth considering once I have spent 6 months on my current connection.

airtel went down big time as I met Mathew Carley!

Yesterday turned out to be an interesting day overall.

I woke up to notice that Google has delivered the Android 2.3.4 build to my phone.

I went to meet Mathew Carley and it turned out to be an excellent experience. Some of you might recognize the name… He is the man who could change the internet scene in India. Though he has his share of critics who love to do ‘investigative journalism’ and ‘online image tarnishing’. He is a brave brave man to have decided to launch Hayai Broadband in India. And he is a very patient man too… I respect him for what he is trying to accomplish and I respect him for all the time he spent answering queries on the India Broadband Forum.

It also turned out to be the day when airtel decided to kill their mobile network in Delhi NCR for a couple of hours.

Most of the time spent in the meeting with Mathew was me without a functional phone. I could take photos but could not share them on the web. I could not post any updates about the meet on Twitter. Vedant found it pretty hard to contact me about the meet.

airtel has a usual statement about the downtime… Unforeseen Technical Outage. Nothing on what they are doing to ensure that this is not repeated in the future. In any case, this was a good lesson that I should carry my older phone (a Tata Indicom number that has never seen any such problem over the last couple of years) with me whenever I go out.

3G license for Gurgaon?

Last time I checked Tata DOCOMO, Idea and Vodafone had 3G licenses for Haryana.

I assumed that applied to Gurgaon too.

But this tweet from the Tata DOCOMO team is rather mmm surprising.

@Sushubh Yes, we DO have the licence 4 Haryana, but not for Gurgaon! #3GLifeless than a minute ago via web

Gurgaon is considered part of Delhi NCR above Haryana?

That means Airtel, Reliance and Vodafone are going to serve in Gurgaon?

Check your car’s tyre pressure today!

If you drive in Delhi NCR region, you should get your car’s tyre pressure today. Both Delhi and Gurgaon are in a big mess this rainy season. There are no roads and if there are any, they are in really bad shape.

So, you would not want to drive on a rough patch which could result in a tyre puncture. Assuming you are not very proficient at changing the punctured tyre, you would require calling up your dear relatives for help.

You would then probably need the help of helplines like Race to come and rescue you from your misery. You would then probably be fooled into paying their inflated membership fee because you would be too worried to care about that.

If you do not want to go through this terrible experience today, you would get your car’s tyres checked the first thing in the morning.

Petrol Price Hiked Finally

As expected petrol is now more expensive in India. Officially it is supposed to cost around Rs. 50 here in Delhi NCR region but considering the experience I have had in the recent past, most of us would be paying around Rs. 55 a liter for the branded edition. I would check next time if the petrol pumps are indeed offering the regular ‘low’ grade petrol for the official price!

Traffic Annoyances on Delhi NCR Roads

Here are some annoyances I face on a daily basis on Delhi NCR roads:

  1. Uncles on scooters with no mirrors who keep on sliding on the right side.
  2. Dudes on bikes who would drive like nuts, cut like creeps and would die if you do not push the break at the right time.\
  3. Brothers in decent cars who drive on the right side of the road but slowly. Even below the legal permissible top speed limits. If you are to drive on the right side of the road, drive faster or let the traffic pass you.
  4. Commercial vehicles who try to overtake each other. Since they are too slow in doing that they block the traffic following them.
  5. Three Wheelers are a complete mess. They do each and everything of the above and more.
