Apple iPhone 4 launch in India

Airtel and Aircel have finally announced the launch of Apple iPhone 4 in India. The Indian launch comes almost after 11 months of the international launch. It is not clear when the next iPhone is coming so it is hard to say how bad the timing of this launch is.

In any case, the launch probably showcases some maturity in the Indian mobile market. Both airtel and Aircel are offering something the market calls reverse subsidy on the iPhone 4.

In simple terms… unlike the US market where you get to buy the phone at a heavily discounted price with a two year long contract… here we have something similar but with a totally different twist.

You would be paying the full pricing of the phone which ranges between Rs. 35000 and Rs. 40000. The phone would be unlocked. And you can get discounts on your mobile bills for the next two years.

Airtel has the better offer where they are offering a maximum of Rs. 1000 discount that could save you Rs. 24000 over a period of two years.

But there are several problems with this model. First… you would be stuck with the same model for those 24 months… second… you would be stuck with the same service provider for those 2 years.

The packages on offer are not that great. Airtel is offering a 1000 rupee per month package with around 1300 MB data transfer. There are tons of free airtel to airtel calls but no free calls to other networks. You would still be paying a very high price for very little in return.

The end result is that if you really want to buy the official Indian version, it would be better to stick to your favorite service provider. Get the package that works for you instead of sticking with either airtel or Aircel.

airtel remembers that they were supposed to launch Apple iPhone 4

airtel sent me a press release today. They are working with Apple to bring the iPhone 4 to India.

How nice.

They were supposed to bring it to India by October/November last year. It is April 2011.

Apple would probably have the next edition out by June-July period.

The press release does not talk about a specific launch date. They just say in the next months. That could mean May, June, July, August etc.

They just might be able to launch it before the arrival of the next version. As they did with iPhone 3GS last year.

This is a total failure from both Apple and airtel.

Is Priyanka Chopra cheating on Nokia with the Apple iPhone?

I am slightly confused here. By some insane coincidence, I landed on the ‘verified’ Twitter account of Priyanka Chopra.

It’s over!! Finally my prosthetics make up parts r over!! Two more days and it’s a film wrap on saat khoon maaf!! My toughest film yet!!less than a minute ago via Twitterrific

Typical celebrity account.

However, I was somewhat amused to see that she is using Twitterrific to tweet.

I checked Twitterrific website. It is only available for Apple Mac, Apple iPad and Apple iPhone.

Now, her account also has some posts from ‘web’. So, I assume she uses the Twitter website itself if she is on a computer.

good mornin guys… woke up super early and now my cal time delayed.. shud i try a half an hr nap??less than a minute ago via web

This tells me something. Priyanka Chopra is most likely using an Apple branded smartphone. That is the iPhone.

And from what I remember, she advertises for Nokia. Not sure if her deal with Nokia has ended.

Something is really fishy here. Nokia PR folks should be alarmed.

PS. Feel free to comment below if I have missed out on something.

Update 1

I needed to update this post… Priyanka Chopra tweeted last night:

Happy 15th bday to nokia!! I have sooo many amazing memories attached with nokia!! My first phone to my last!!! Here’s to Many more years!less than a minute ago via Twitterrific

She is congratulating Nokia. And the tweet was posted using Twitterrific. She could have been using a Mac. But I am still guessing she uses an iPhone. She was in Gurgaon last night for the launch of Culture Gully. I doubt, she would be tweeting from a laptop (or even the Apple iPad) while traveling.
