Surprises on Ubuntu Linux

Google Picasa works fine. Google Earth works fine. Skype works fine. Yahoo webcams work on Kopete. I even managed to run IrfanView through Wine!
Opera and Firefox works quite similar to how they work on the Win platform. Except I believe that some button and menu options are differently placed.

How to get applications in the Applications menu?

New problem… I install some application using the Synaptic Package Manager but it does not add an entry into the Applications menu.
One such application is Kflickr which is I believe a KDE application to upload images to Flickr. Now, I am using Gnome on Ubuntu so perhaps this is one of the reason.
