East 101 and The Monk in Gurgaon

Yeah, both are restaurants in Gurgaon. And both are contemporary targeted at perhaps the third page people. While the East 101 situation near Gillette building on the MG Road is a World Cuisine restaurant cum Bar, The Monk is located in the Galaxy Towers on the Delhi Jaipur highway is a Chinese restaurant.

A common post for both of these considering the food sucked. The people at East 101 were unfriendly. However, the guy at The Monk was unusually friendly and would not let us leave without having a complementary sweet disk after he realized that we disliked the food we were served.

I think I should stick to Moet’s or Pizza Hut in the future for our outings. No fancy restaurants for me any longer. We are probably used to eating Indianized version of World Cuisines!

I thought the food–(just had a Chinese sticky rice-chicken combo and a Teppan-style noodle–lamb combo, priced at Rs 295/- each, between the three of us,my son aged 18, daughter aged 15, and self)–was just OK. Was informed that it was healthy and authentic Chinese cuisine—or some kind of Oriental fusion.Guess weaning oneself off “Chinjabi”-as one reviewer so inventively put it-will take a few trips to the appropriately-named “Monk”–possibly a tribute to the supposedly austere(??) cuisine.Brings to mind the “Sattvik bhojan”of Brahmins. And, perhaps in keeping with the austerely-disposed’s guilty sweet indulgengences –desserts have sweet-”wok”ed their way into the menu. Our trio thought the desserts were to die for. We sampled a date pancakes with ice-cream and sesame balls with hazelnut, each priced at Rs.175/-. Our kudos to the dessert chef are, we think, just deserts.

I’ve recently located here from Hong Kong and can only assume that the people leaving negative reviews for this site have never actually tasted chinese cuisine before outside of India.

The Monk restaurant is the closest to anything resembling Chinese as I have found here, from an ingredients persepctive. Yes, they need to work on their menu but I think they’ve made a great start.

Well, that’s a good enough recommendation for me. I’m visiting from Canada and I’ve tasted authentic Chinese food from both Hong Kong and Punjab. From discussions with friends worldwide, I’ve decided that the Cantonese will probably hate authentic Punjabi Chinese cuisine forever and Punjabis will probably hate authentic Cantonese Chinese cuisine forever too. But since both are a hit in the Centre of the Universe (i.e. Toronto), I guess the only people not joining the multicultural cuisine party are Punjabis and Cantonese…

East 101 , Gillete building gurgaon and the Monk Galaxy towers. I have been to both these places presonally and I found out the food to be excellent. Monk is great with chinese whereas East 101 was excellent with Muglai , chinese oriental and Thai food. Monk happenend to be only a chinese reastaurent but east 101 also doubles up as a night club and party place. The staff was exceptionally helpful. Infact one time at East 101 i happen to drop my drink on the table and on the food myself. The staff not only did replace my drink and the food but also I was not charged for the replacement on my fault. Also the GM Mr. Manish kalra personally got us an excellent service and a discount on the bill on the part of discomfort. Now thats excellent service and personal care.
