Ofcoure not only the Memor size but also the bandwidth at which at works is importnat. A 533 MHz is a good one. If there are more than 1 Ram then the new one should not be less than the old one in terms of BW otherwise the systems takes the lowest of both. Also it also depends upon the mother board u r using and what is supports. The arrangement of Ram in given slots also matters as u need to balance with the old one if there is any. So better see the manual of the motherboard. There is no relation between the Memory and net speed but ofocure there is a relation between the memory configuration and the PC performance.

For a moment I thought you are talking about your memory bw being low with the added RAM. Same goes with me. 1 gig ram in my notebook but 64k net speed. no relation between them directly but at the end of the day i have the same feeling about it which you have.
