Politeness Pays

I went to see I, Robot today. Yeah yeah, Old movie, but released in Chandigarh today. The last movie I saw was Spiderman 2 and resulted in me cursing PVR Europa… So it was long time without any movie outing. And like always, I was late for the movie… drove like a maniac to the nearest multiplex and after passing 4 red lights with no traffic around me, got a bit frustrated… on the fifth one, I did not break early and went on crossing the zebra crossing so that I can just zoom on as soon as the light turns green.

Tough luck a traffic policeman was crossing the road and I almost ran him over. Duh, I was missing out on the starting of the movie and now a cop who so wanted to challan me for jumping a red light! He took me to his superior, who checked my RC and License. In addition to assuming that I was going to jump the red light, he assumed the license was a colored copy and not the original. It was destined to be a bad day…

Did what my instinct told me to do, explained that the license was original (it was made in Ballabhgarh district on a cheap DeskJet printer in the Registering Authority’s office, with photo snapped on another cheap Logitech webcam!) and I just crossed the zebra crossing and was not planning to jump the red light. Also, accepted crossing the zebra crossing was a mistake on my part so well… I was sorry. He asked me if I knew what zebra crossings were for and if I knew crossing them were a traffic offence… Yes sir, I do and I am sorry was the answer…

Got lucky, he let me go after giving me a warning citing the reason that since I accepted my fault, I should get some credit for it. Hmm… I always had this feeling that cops in Chandigarh were more polite than the cops in Delhi. Cops of Haryana are not even in the picture. A quote from the movie matched the happenings of the day…

It is better to be lucky than smart.

It feels better now with no traffic violation ticket to my name. A record intact since 3-4 years at least…
