Citibank in India: Not for Ram, Shyam and me



I had earlier criticized ICICI for keeping the minimum balance at an amount I thought was pretty high (Rs. 5000) but I certainly was not ready for this. I saw a Citibank advertisement on some site about their Suvidha account which was offering zero balance bank accounts. I thought of getting some information on this stuff and literally got shell shocked.

The Citibank representative asked me about my employment status which is certainly not a question I had like to respond to at the current moment. Secondly he asked me about my average balance I maintained in my ICICI account. The average for the last 6-7 months was above half a lakh though not so good at the moment (I am literally broke at this very moment). Well, this was the turning point. The representative simply got dismayed at this number and replied that he was helpless in my case as Citibank India has the minimum balance requirement of a lakh of rupees (approx USD 2300). The zero balance accounts was reserved for people working in companies in pact with Citibank and that too only in the capital city of Delhi…

Pretty darn interesting. How many people in India can manage that much! Maybe the IITians or the IIMs working in MNCs. But not the general public in India, not even an average businessman.

Maybe the lack of consumers is the reason why we don’t have that many Citibank branches and ATMs in the country. But who can blame them! They are living in a world of their own. They don’t accept people who would like an account with them just because they are not rich enough…

I cannot open a Citibank bank account because I am not a lakhpati! I think I will avoid the embarrassment of checking the minimum requirement in HSBC which was my second choice to get a second bank account…

Also worth mentioning is the fact that Citibank India Website is not Opera compliant even though the american site is. Pretty sad… Even more so when it recommends you to get IE5 or Netscape 4.7!

    Citibank India is certainly not worth it !!!

    These guys are frauds and cheats and without any accountability.

    After opting for an account with zero balance in which there was an annual fee of 500 rupees. We are stillleft with no account.

    Citibank was given a cheque of rupees 2000 for opening the account, however the cheque was not deposited in time by them and was returned for want of funds.

    The representative Arindam from south extention II branch in new delhi informed us that the account will remain active for 7 days during which time we can deposit cash and the account will get reactivated.

    The Next day the money was deposited in the bank ATM (The ATM pin was working which meant the account is atill active ), however the next day too the account status still stated closed.

    On calling up the call centre we were informed that this account was deactivated and to reactivate it we have to now give them 10000 rupees and also another 250 rupees for reactivating the account.

    Isnt this Bullshit !!!

    Citibank doesnt care about false statements made by their own executives.

    And now they dont even know about the 2000 rupees that was deposited in the ATM machine and have asked for 3-4 days. I wonder if I would even get my money back.

    Poor service and false policies will make this bank a very unpopular place for people to invest their savings.

    Take your money from citi bank account and RUN away as fast as you can from this bank …………….In my case the check depositd (Rs 11000) in January 2005 in my account is still missing and money never deposted in to my account. I called so many times, wrote to banks managers but no action taken till this time….

    We should not blame the whole bank for the petty issue of chq deposited on time or the other.
    One should understand there are some limitations with some bank and there are policies which are designed by the bank and also RBI knew about this.
    Also there are some issues which can be handed politely rather than raising an issue because it is easier to find fault in others but is very difficult to help others and solve the problem in a cooperative way.

    Please be careful before you open an account with Shiti (citi) Bank as they are complete Bastards!!! They follow illegal steps to harrass customers they cheat them.

This was due to a technical fault at their end which they agreed on the phone. But I could not withdraw cash from the ATM nor get the cheques that I had issued cleared.

    Citibank India should really be named as Shitibank India.

    Not only is their attitude bad…but their technical infra is also below par I guess…. imagine something like this happening in the US…they would have been sued for millions of dollars.

In 2004, one of the Citibank call center rep offered a loan and since I needed the money, i took it.They send the check but did not send any papers explaining how the EMIs, interest rate and blah blah, I am still paying the loan off and still have 10 more months to go to pay off the whole loan. Hypothetically Let’s say the loan was 10 bucks, the total I have to pay back is Rs 19.50p !! That’s how shrewd the bank is !!
    Can the law be informed about how the bank is duping, cheating, ignorant customers?

    Citibank the No.1 Fraudulent bank in india. They never Keepup their promises. Last Decemberr they promised while changing my ordinary dt. card to gorcery card a gift voucher of Rs.2000.00. Till today they have not kept up their promises instead they send some road side gift items which is not worth more thatn Rs.400.00. MOoreover they have cancelled the Grocery card by them self and iam left with no ATM card at this moment. Iam going to take legal action againt the bank.

Most of these are companies financed by the banks themselves and are known to deploy unemployed youth with criminal background and police history. These youth are told to collect the bank’s outstanding by using varying degrees of collection methods some of which border on extortion. Collection methods include regular telephone calls at odd hours and holidays. Some of them do visit debtors and embarrass them in their offices. In extreme cases extortion methods are known to have been used to collect a debt. Most of the employees of these collection agents have no clue about banking but are employed because of their looks and their criminal record. It is possible that some third rate collection agent must have tried to pull a fast one on you and intimidated you by phone and through the sms to see if you budge under pressure and pay him some money..

    If this should happen to you then do not get provoked at all and keep your cool at all times. Defuse the inquirers by politely informing them that your matter is in dispute and that Citi Bank will receive, if it hasn’t already, an official communication from Court about your dispute.

    Many Foreign Banks and other Foreign Financial Intermediaries operating in India have reportedly formed an illegal consortium for criminal extortion and intimidation by publishing / exchanging / damaging information over computer systems and networks and also the Internet / W3 concerning the financial affairs of citizens of India in gross violation of the Fundamental Rights of these affected citizens who are being injured.
    I am told that presently most banks have compiled a list of defaulters, their own, as well as from other available sources. Details of all clients are run through this list to check if the same client had applied for a loan and if yes, the file is rejected.

    This is called De-duping. Many banks and financial institutions are known to use a web-based application that will automate this process thereby ensuring lower turn around times for granting credit and greater accuracy in weeding out such potential risky applicants at the stage of origination. As Risk management is an integral part of any financial institution, the de-dupe system will aid that through an efficient and thorough process. A Dedupe process is deployed to find out duplicate entries from manual entry’s Upload from flat files from various remote location (Bank branch’s) within India. Many companies provide Dedupe checks based on their substantial data base to track history of habitual defaulters.

    I think rather than getting emotional we must learn to look at better side. Does anybody remember the scene before liberalisation? WAS anyonee were happy the way banks earlier used to get treat customers. Rememember those delays in getting simple things like drafts or updation of your passbooks. It is because of these MNC Banks that now we are enjoying good services and value add services. You may call citi by any name, but it’s known for it’s ethical practices worldwide.

    Don’t be complaint mongers, it’s very easy to say things or complain. In every bank such incidences happen. Why did this person who lost his 11000 did not file any complaint, if he has a valid proof he can claim the amount. And by the way all the banks have now drop boxes for cheques, so cheques can get lost in case of any bank. It’s easy to spread rumours anyone can do that.

    And by the way all the services come for a price. They ask you to maintain a minimum balance as they give many value add services. Choice is ours, you want services or you are happy banking the traditional way. I have never even visited my branch even once…that’s what i call service.

    AND HOW CAN ANYONE CALL THEM THEIFS….THEY NEVER CAME TO YOU OR PRESSED YOU TO OPEN AN ACCOUNT…i guess we all opted for this because we were more badly dealt by other banks.

    I WOULD REQUEST YOU ALL TO RETHINK AND TO THINK RATIONALLY. IF YOU CAN WRITE 10 complaints against MNC banks, i guess huge databases can be filled if one were to complain against other banks.

    By the way i don’t represent any MNC bank. I am a normal person like you. And by the way my lawyer friend will also charge fees ultimately or maybe earn something in paper work. I don’t think he is a social worker.

    I liked the opinion of person who mentioned about banking Ombudsman. This is the right channel to approach.

    Also someone commented that RBI is looking into affairs of citi..Well sir you need to update yourself and also i would request not to spread such rumours.

    THERE ARE MILLIONS OF SATISFIED CUSTOMERS OF CITIBANK WORLDWIDE….if they were cheaters noone in this world is fool to trust them. Think about it and don’t buy these false claims. Also does anyone has idea that banks apart from dealing with retail customers have an array of activities. I think my lawyer friend and other must be aware of that. They don’t really have to do those tactics to earn money in that way. CITIBANK is a trusted name in corporate world, and you know how much competition is there. Had they been doing these practices they would have failed like many co-operative banks failed.

    AND AVOID LAWYERS AT ALL COSTS. THEY ARE REAL MONEY EXTRACTORS.

    I have attempted through several sources to clarify my
    position regarding my unfair treatment by my previous
    employer, Citibank. I had no previous plans to leave
    my position as Head Teller at the Citibank branch in
    Carmel. After 4 years of employment with the company,
    the unfair and unequal treatment of employees led to
    medically supervised work-related stress. The manager
    of the branch then accused me of job abandonment which
    led to my termination via UPS delivery on December 15,
    2005, while I was at home on medical leave.

    Subsequent to my termination, I received numerous
    correspondences that referenced me as terminated, no
    longer with the company, and as a former employee. My
    401K and pension have both been forwarded to me.
    However, when interviewed by the Department of Fair
    Employment and Housing, Citibank representatives
    reported that I was terminated due to not personally
    reporting my absence, but rather having medical
    documentation reported by my physician. When
    interviewed by the U. S. Department Wage and Hours
    Division, Citibank representatives reported on August
    8, 2006, that I was still an employee of the company
    and that a letter indicating such would be forwarded
    to me. To date, this letter has not been received.

    I have continued to be in contact with several clients
    that have stated that Citibank representatives
    indicated that I was either on vacation, or that I
    voluntarily resigned in order to work with my husband
    in his new business. This is absolutely untrue. It was
    my intention to continue my employment as the benefits
    were extremely important to me, as well as to my
    family.

    Clearly, there has been a gross misrepresentation by
    Citibank, either to its clients or to the U. S.
    Department Wage and Hours Division. It is my position
    that I was unfairly terminated by Citibank. The
    unscrupulous behavior of Citibank and its
    representatives, locally and at the corporate level,
    is unacceptable.

    It is also my opinion that if a corporation as large
    as Citibank is representing itself on a local level,
    the local management and staff should act accordingly.
    A large part of the attraction of the Monterey area is
    the sense of community that is felt here on a day to
    day basis. If Citibank is allowed to misrepresent its
    actions to clients and government agencies, where will
    the corporate takeover end?

    a few years back, I worked for citibank/corp. for one full year.

    It was without doubt the worst job, and the worst nightmare I have

    ever lived. The treatment of employees was abominable, among many

    other things. .

    I worked with people that had been there for years. They were not treated
    any better, than I was.

    I quit in the middle of the day. I sat in my car for a good twenty minutes

    breathing in what was for me, the most fresh air I had in one year.

    In the following year, at least six people I had worked with, and had been there

    for years, were let go, with the very worst excuses ever. Of course the lost all

    benifits, and retirments.

    Needless to say, I have never again banked with them, or used one of their credit

    cards, or have done any other business with them, whatsoever, and when asked I inform orher companies why.

    I have always…and to this day, informed everyone within earshot, of that disgusting thing, know as “citibank/corp.

I was approved for a lone and used my car as collateral which later I contacted them to hand me over the Title for renewal and it?s been now 3 ½ months I have been waiting for it and now have to deal with my vehicle parked without insurance and Citibank?s excuse is that Motor Vehicle can not locate my title and the most frustrating thing is that all the time I call I must have gave my # over 20 times and never get a call back regarding the status of my situation I would have to repeat myself all over again to a new rep??.How frustrating!!!     Thank you for your reply and for requesting information form Citibank. Citibank states that I was fired for not following policy but yet they didn’t follow their own policy and guide lines nor were they equal and fair in how they treated each employee.

    Citibank states that I was fired for not calling in, but I did have my doctor call in at the end of my doctors appointment on 12/12/05 and my doctor also faxed on a note. Contact was made with the bank. My doctor called in to protect my health.
    I have copies of some of Citibank policy which are in the employee hand book and from what I have read Citibank and the manager didn’t follow proper procedure. Before firing they are to consider your work performance and take that into consideration and my reviews were very good. I never got a verbal warning just written up and the write up was not correct with errors. Citibank gives an exit interview which I didn’t get nor was I asked to send in my keys.
    Citibank sent me my Cobra papers and never offered me FMLA, when they find put that I was applying for disability or that I was disabled they reinstated my benefits and made them retro to 01/01/06
    Citibank then sends me a check for about six weeks worth of pay with no deductions for benefits then all of a sudden they start deducting for medical and dental and now I have to pay for these benefits out of my pocket
    Many if Citibank clients have told me they have been told that I left to work for my husband or that I am on vacation.
    Lisa Austin of Citigroup mentioned that when I go back to work they would set up payments for some of these benefits but she couldn’t explain how this would happened after I explained that I had been fired. Is Citibank going to fire me again via UPS when my doctor feels that I am well enough to look for work?
    Citibank didn’t; follow policy to the tee and fires me for not following policy to the tee but had no heart about me being ill and my doctor helping me out.
    Citibank made the list of the best 100 companies for working mother to work at but as I try to put my daughter first they started harassing me with abandonment and corrective action.
    My seniority didn’t matter to them.
    Ronon at the US Dept of labor, wage and hour division ( 1-415-744-5590 ext 226 ) was told by Citigroup attorney that I was still employed and they would send a letter to explain but the letter never came.
    Citibank fired me while in the middle of a workers comp pending case.
    Ann at the DFEH ( 1-408-277-1916 ) was lied to by Jeff Ursino and Kathleen Munoz, they explain to the DFEH how and why they fired me.
    Again Citibank violated state labor codes and more.
    Employees which are unethical are still working there and I get fired for having my doctor call in, these employees broke company policy and still have jobs.
    Citibank recently sent me a letter thanking me for my five years of service and it states looking forward to another five years but I was fired on 12/13/05 a few days later a get another letter stating that yes I had been terminated and the stocks that were issued to me for being a good employee had been taken back due to an error in their system. I believe the only error is that I was wrongfully terminated and Citibank is back tracking trying to cover up their mistakes.
    My pension and 401k have been sent to me due to termination and then I get the letter saying looking forward to another five years.

    Why did it take Citibank a few weeks to give me a clear reason as to why I was fired? Why was my final check deposited into my account, why was I fired via UPS, Why was my final check not ordered until 12/14/05? Why did Chrys Smith call workers comp on 12/14/05 to see if my case was going to be denied but yet didn’t bother telling them that they had already fired me? This is violation of code 132A.
    Why doesn’t the staff at Citibank in Carmel simply say “she is no longer with us” instead of all the lies?
    Why was Citibank so strict with me and the policy and yet not the other employees?
    Why was it ok for Andrea to change her schedule but not me and I had the seniority over her?
    Citibank told the Office of Thrift Supervision that they were dealing with it internally and the office asked them to send me a letter of explanation yet they never did.
    How many other state codes have they ignored and violated?

    Ms. Garcia,

    I have attempted through several sources to clarify my
    position regarding my unfair treatment by my previous
    employer, Citibank. I had no previous plans to leave
    my position as Head Teller at the Citibank branch in
    Carmel. After 4 years of employment with the company,
    the unfair and unequal treatment of employees led to
    medically supervised work-related stress. The manager
    of the branch then accused me of job abandonment which
    led to my termination via UPS delivery on December 15,
    2005, while I was at home on medical leave.

    Subsequent to my termination, I received numerous
    correspondences that referenced me as terminated, no
    longer with the company, and as a former employee. My
    401K and pension have both been forwarded to me.
    However, when interviewed by the Department of Fair
    Employment and Housing, Citibank representatives
    reported that I was terminated due to not personally
    reporting my absence, but rather having medical
    documentation reported by my physician. When
    interviewed by the U. S. Department Wage and Hours
    Division, Citibank representatives reported on August
    8, 2006, that I was still an employee of the company
    and that a letter indicating such would be forwarded
    to me. To date, this letter has not been received.

    I have continued to be in contact with several clients
    that have stated that Citibank representatives
    indicated that I was either on vacation, or that I
    voluntarily resigned in order to work with my husband
    in his new business. This is absolutely untrue. It was
    my intention to continue my employment as the benefits
    were extremely important to me, as well as to my
    family.

    Clearly, there has been a gross misrepresentation by
    Citibank, either to its clients or to the U. S.
    Department Wage and Hours Division. It is my position
    that I was unfairly terminated by Citibank. The
    unscrupulous behavior of Citibank and its
    representatives, locally and at the corporate level,
    is unacceptable.

    It is also my opinion that if a corporation as large
    as Citibank is representing itself on a local level,
    the local management and staff should act accordingly.
    A large part of the attraction of the Monterey area is
    the sense of community that is felt here on a day to
    day basis. If Citibank is allowed to misrepresent its
    actions to clients and government agencies, where will
    the corporate takeover end?

    I whole heartedly understand you delemma, and my heart goes

    out to you.

    a few years back, I worked for citibank/corp. for one full year.

    It was without doubt the worst job, and the worst nightmare I have

    ever lived. The treatment of employees was abominable, among many

    other things. .

    I worked with people that had been there for years. They were not treated
    any better, than I was.

    I quit in the middle of the day. I sat in my car for a good twenty minutes

    breathing in what was for me, the most fresh air I had in one year.

    In the following year, at least six people I had worked with, and had been there

    for years, were let go, with the very worst excuses ever. Of course the lost all

    benifits, and retirments.

    Needless to say, I have never again banked with them, or used one of their credit

    cards, or have done any other business with them, whatsoever, and when asked I inform orher companies why.

I was approved for a lone and used my car as collateral which later I contacted them to hand me over the Title for renewal and it?s been now 3 ½ months I have been waiting for it and now have to deal with my vehicle parked without insurance and Citibank?s excuse is that Motor Vehicle can not locate my title and the most frustrating thing is that all the time I call I must have gave my # over 20 times and never get a call back regarding the status of my situation I would have to repeat myself all over again to a new rep??.How frustrating!!!     Thank you for your reply and for requesting information form Citibank. Citibank states that I was fired for not following policy but yet they didn’t follow their own policy and guide lines nor were they equal and fair in how they treated each employee.

    Citibank states that I was fired for not calling in, but I did have my doctor call in at the end of my doctors appointment on 12/12/05 and my doctor also faxed on a note. Contact was made with the bank. My doctor called in to protect my health.
    I have copies of some of Citibank policy which are in the employee hand book and from what I have read Citibank and the manager didn’t follow proper procedure. Before firing they are to consider your work performance and take that into consideration and my reviews were very good. I never got a verbal warning just written up and the write up was not correct with errors. Citibank gives an exit interview which I didn’t get nor was I asked to send in my keys.
    Citibank sent me my Cobra papers and never offered me FMLA, when they find put that I was applying for disability or that I was disabled they reinstated my benefits and made them retro to 01/01/06
    Citibank then sends me a check for about six weeks worth of pay with no deductions for benefits then all of a sudden they start deducting for medical and dental and now I have to pay for these benefits out of my pocket
    Many if Citibank clients have told me they have been told that I left to work for my husband or that I am on vacation.
    Lisa Austin of Citigroup mentioned that when I go back to work they would set up payments for some of these benefits but she couldn’t explain how this would happened after I explained that I had been fired. Is Citibank going to fire me again via UPS when my doctor feels that I am well enough to look for work?
    Citibank didn’t; follow policy to the tee and fires me for not following policy to the tee but had no heart about me being ill and my doctor helping me out.
    Citibank made the list of the best 100 companies for working mother to work at but as I try to put my daughter first they started harassing me with abandonment and corrective action.

    Citibank recently sent me a letter thanking me for my five years of service and it states looking forward to another five years but I was fired on 12/13/05 a few days later a get another letter stating that yes I had been terminated and the stocks that were issued to me for being a good employee had been taken back due to an error in their system. I believe the only error is that I was wrongfully terminated and Citibank is back tracking trying to cover up their mistakes.

Again on 8th November, your office asked for the scanned copy of all the documents that I had posted to you and also my mailing address. On 9 th November, I had sent all the scanned copies through email. On 10th November, I received a reply from your side, saying: “We are resolving your query and would get back to you in 3 business working days”. On 13 th November, I came to know that you had lost my documents. May be that is the reason you wanted to see the acknowledgement of the registered letter which is in my possession. On 14th November scanned copy of the acknowledgement was sent to you. On 18th November I received your last mail where your manager had written: “We require more time to respond to the query. We will revert to you shortly” . After that on 16 th , 23rd, 27th November 2006 I had repeatedly asked you about the status and deadline to solve this problem but your office kept silent in this matter. This very urgent for me and it is already very late (cheque date was 20 th July).

    I fail to understand why you are not issuing the FIRC despite sending you all the details, as asked by your office. I expect more responsible action from a bank like Citi Bank. Please let me know whether you are in a position to issue the FIRC. Your clear-cut answer will help me to act accordingly.

Again on 8th November, your office asked for the scanned copy of all the documents that I had posted to you and also my mailing address. On 9 th November, I had sent all the scanned copies through email. On 10th November, I received a reply from your side, saying: “We are resolving your query and would get back to you in 3 business working days”. On 13 th November, I came to know that you had lost my documents. May be that is the reason you wanted to see the acknowledgement of the registered letter which is in my possession. On 14th November scanned copy of the acknowledgement was sent to you. On 18th November I received your last mail where your manager had written: “We require more time to respond to the query. We will revert to you shortly” . After that on 16 th , 23rd, 27th November 2006 I had repeatedly asked you about the status and deadline to solve this problem but your office kept silent in this matter. This very urgent for me and it is already very late (cheque date was 20 th July).

    I fail to understand why you are not issuing the FIRC despite sending you all the details, as asked by your office. I expect more responsible action from a bank like Citi Bank. Please let me know whether you are in a position to issue the FIRC. Your clear-cut answer will help me to act accordingly.

    Consider a situation, you have to deposit/pay and the only nearest available being CITI. They wont accept your money over the counter; and even if they do so, they will charge you Rs-100.00. Citi doesnt appreciate people makein pymts for their creditcards. It wont be accepted over-the-counter. THEY want you to spend at least 2 days with your money in transit-1earn interest and 2 harge interest on your creditcards.

    Should you happen to deposit a check, please stop and reconsider, because your check may not find its destination back to the payor bank-simply because, their CITIATM mahine is actually a shredded. CITI will ensure and delgate atleast a dozen people to sit over your check, LAY EGGS and KEEP with it untill it passes several stages-enough for the check to become stale.

    DONT expect from CITI-allow them to keep it STICKED to their asses.

They did not change me for few month then started chargin Rs.500 every month. I did not notice this for a long time. One day i noticed and ask them.     When I order DD by phone, they promise with in the same day and it never gets delivered on that day it takes 2 or 3 days. when we ask they say delivery boy came and your office closed at 7PM. It is shit, when my company has 24 hours front desk to receive them and I will be in office till 9PM, and on back side of cover you never see any write up they attempted to deliver. It is simply lying by citibank employess . I always kept big money in thier bank and now really looking to change for good bank.
    Looking at all the feed back I think I need to change my bank.

Only in the year 2007 I started looking into the statements because although I have been paying monthly a minimum of Rs 10,000/-ro 20,000/- as against the minimum due of Rs 2100/- on an average due as per their statement I find the taotal dues never get reduced. If I send Rs 10,000/- only a sum of about Rs 2500/- is accounted for against the dues. I have two card one paltinum and anither Vissa card. I ahve paid Rs 27000/- more than the dues for the year 2007 upto August 07,but citi bank still demands Rs 15000/- and similarly on other card also. I have been asking for a detailed statemenmt of account for the amounts claimed by them but no response from them excepting reminders. I was also shocked to notice

I have been demanding them to waive the excess interest charges and other levies like late fee etc. They do not care for any complaints from their customers .it looks l;ike that. There is no transparency in their dealings with the customers. It is surprising that depite so many complaints from thier customers they are still thriving in their fraudulent credit card business.

  97. I am surprised to note that despite so many complaints of serious nature citi bank is doing brisk business. The credit card of citi bank is not is not of any help for the common man. Eventhough SC has ruled that citi bank for that matter any credit card issuing bank cannot charge interest at more than 18% and RBI regulations issuong guidelines in this regard they are voilating the rules with immunity and liberally quote RBI rules ,it is like, devil quoting scriptures. Their actions of charging heft interest rate invite comtempt of court proceedings.
