Is America A Better Democracy Than India?

It’s not old news that many political parties and leaders of our great country don’t like the idea of Sonia Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister of India if Congress ever comes to power in the near future. But it’s rather disturbing to see that they are making a political issue out of it. They sure have loads of other things to go to people to ask for votes. What happened to the population explosion, poverty, development, making India a developed nation and blah blah blah…?

India when I last checked out was still a democratic country and despite the doubts that reservations and caste politics create in my mind, I believe that origin of birth can’t be a good enough reason to deny a person his rights which he or she earns while becoming a citizen of India. Yeah, I have loads of doubt myself on her leadership qualities, but it’s up to the party she leads and the people who votes for her who decides whether she gets to be the Prime Minister of India or not. As for my own choice, I am currently in favor of none as no decent option is present. TINA factor leads me to avoid voting at all but if people like Arun Shourie and Jagmohan are taken into consideration, the situation is not catastrophic.

Now coming to America . Californians just got themselves a governor born in Austria who has no major advantage over Sonia Gandhi if we take political experience into account still I don’t remember reading about anyone raising the issue of his origin of birth as a non-American. There is a pretty good possibility a person of Indian origin could become the governor of Louisiana in a month’s time. And there is nothing of that sort of issues even there. OK, Bobby Jindal was not born in India that makes things a bit different. But Arnold was born in Austria for sure. How would Indians feel if Bobby Jindal is disqualified just because he is an Indian-American by origin?

Whatever the case may be, this just shows how 2 democracies react to a similar issue and India got a lot to do to improve its record…

Well, anyone who is rich, influential and powerful can become a politician in the States and Arnie has charisma and popular support so he won ( lots of filmstars in India become Members of Parliament in India too) but he can never become the President because he was not born in th USA! So, its not true that America compares better to India, infact in India you cld argue that there are no legal provisions forbidding Sonia Gandhi from becoming the PM!
I agree though that the issue got a lot of bad press, especially with loonies like Uma Bharati and Sushma Swaraj ranting against S.Gandhi on T.V — people like them give India a bad name and demean our history of secularism and democracy!!
