Three of my friends have received extremely inflated bills this week. Most of them are just planning to surrender the phone as well as the broadband connection. Looks like the time of cheap broadband has still not arrived. Unless you have to just check your mails and chat with your friends. A task which does not even require a broadband connection!

It seems that the tech-savvy staff of BSNL have a blighted understanding of the so-called home users. They believe that a home user has nothing worthwhile to do while using the net other than chatting or browsing. Based on this presumption they have devised the so-called cheap tarrifs or lets put it in their language, reasonable tarrif. The fact is it is nowhere near reasonable, leave alone cheap. Any serious home user who wants to make use of the net in a productive way spends at least 40-60 mbs per day of upload and download, which if taken for 25 days goes well above 1 GB, which again costs equivalent to 2 GB according to their reasonable tarrif plan. I simply don’t get it, what is so reasonable or cheap about this. We are still a very poor country and even though how much urbane we become, it hurts the most when u find three quarters of ur earnings from net goes into paying up your broadband cum telephone bill. A public sector company such as BSNL which is run partly by the Government who I always guess while voting, that it will make things more easier till the day we stand shoulder to shoulder with our foreign developed friends. I suppose they should stop behaving like any other Tom, Dick, and Harry company who only sniffs profits and does ANYTHING for it and behave more responsibly towards we poor Indians who still have to figure out how to increase our per capita income. I suppose thats what a Government aided company is supposed to do, like be more helpful towards their wards and make things easier.

I got 10,000 Rs as my bill for july. I have Home 500 connection .I m cheated by BSNL I was shocked at the amount mentioned in the bill.
There was no system to check my usage (upload /download) limit. Even the officials have given me a ID with wrong spelling of my name.
I was told at the time of installation that I have unlimited download access till the usage tracking system is in place and I was marrowed of 10,000 rupees . I wrote letters to the GM Faridabad but to no avail

i am facing the similar problem (500 plan).i used to check my account usage with dataone bandwidth finder untill dec 2005.but from jan 06 i could not check my usage ,even with band. finder or their login page. they have charged me an amount of 16,000 rs for only jan excluding 500 and total of 22,000.but how could this happen i don’t download so much ,that abot 14-16 gb.i talked with bsnl officials but they said they can’t help as the usage is counted at bangalore.i think my account password is misused by someone.what can i do about it.

I confirmed this the day i took the connection which was like 7 months back. To this day i have always left my heavy downloads towards the weekends mainly friday, saturday and sunday. Rest of my work i do during the daytime and i check regularly my data usage which as per my satisfaction and since the past one month they have been showing the data usage excluding the night time free hours. I never ever got a bill which was more than rs.700/- that being the highest and the average being rs.550/- and i download whole dvd’s of the size 800 mb through my 256 kbps connection in 2 nights.
So its all bout how u use this connection to your advantage. I seriously dont think they are cheating us, atleast here in ahmedabad. Rest of the cities there might be a different story.

I Downloads ISO images, log in to servers and downloads large stat files etc in a controlled manner. All my downloads are either after 11 pm of by Saturday and Sundays since i have my Office to serve at day time.
And i have till date received genuine bills contrary to you people, who are complaining of cheating.
You need to understand few things pals. The service solely depends on your exchange. The networking equipment, the servers at the exchange connected to your house and the last mile is all that matters. I confirm this since i have visited to my exchange and has a good knowledge of what installations are at place there. We are nettiquets and we all has the basic responsibility to keep our expectations with the practical limits. The service in India is a new horizon, but with all new technology it is yet to mature here. I have friends at US who use to view online movies at their Gig enabled ADSL service. In india the lastmile provided by BSNL is old cupper cable and hence cannot afford to provide even a sustained 256 KBPS for a day period. So the difference is in the network and our exectations.
I enjoy my BSNL broadband a lot and wish it would provide a sustained 1 MBPS, (if not GBPS enabled) connection / error or discnnection free for a period of atleast 1 month some day .

BSNL is the only option in medium and smaller cities. Considering that they have a huge responsibility to service a major part of India’s ever growing middle class I think they are doing a good job. BSNL’s Dataone is still in it’s infancy. It was like this with Cellone (BSNL’s mobile service). Today Cellone is the best in India. (Don’t be misled by Airtel or RIM’s marketing) Cellone has the widest coverage and it’s call quality is good. Dataone will also become smooth once the teething phase is over. Broadband’s quality of service depends on the physical condition of the copper cables connecting the device to the exchange and also the distance to the exchange. I get fairly good speeds, but users who live closer to the exchanges get better speeds. Have patience!!!

before switching to bsnl’s dataone, i had tried everything. bsnl has been providing excellent servce in my case, and i will recommend the 500 rupee plan as frm 2-8 am u can have ur fill of downloads. i am getting 256kbps all the time and downloading is around 24-28kbps.

Am using bsnl broadband, 256 kbps, 900 plus scheme. Man it sucks.
Most of the time i get 5-8 KB/s. If you get anywhere b/w 25-30 kilo Bytes/s, its considered proper 256kbps speed by BSNL.
In a day for around 1-2 hrs mostly during evening i get 20-30 kB/s but its 5-8 kB/s all the other times.

It gives username/password invalid in the domain when trying to connect using RASPPPOE dialup connection. This username password is what is provided by BSNL and I have not changed it. Interestingly, when I used one of my friends id/pwd, I was able to connect to the net. Using that, when I logged into the account admin page (http://10.240.43.216), i was able to login without any error. The BSNL has so far not able to help me and I am still after them. Any kind of help would be appriciated.

Right now i couldn’t care less about the stupid BSNL speeds… I am not a computer expert or anything, but I’ve been trying to register for a couple of internet forums and they keep banning me because i have an “abusive IP” address. Which i did a slight search on and found it’s basically some “dynamic IP” crap. I don’t care. I’m not a spammer or hacker or whatever. And I’m sure as hell not paying BSNL to get categorized as one and then denied services.

For the past one week, Iam unable to access the Account Administration Page of BSNL. And this is not the first time, it is happening. I have even noticed that every month, especially at the end of the month – iam facing this Problem. If it would have been a Private ISP, atleast he would have done something about this.

U all are not cheated… There is an easy way to chek the usage. Install the software “DATAONE USAGE FINDER”. This software will show will show u how much bytes of data u have uploaded and downloaded… And the happy hours(FREE USAGE HOURS 2 TO 8 AM) is applicable only for 500 plan users…
Some users said that BSNL doesnot offer 2Mbps speed. Infact they are offering 2Mbps speed. and BSNL is the only ISP in india to offer this cost effective plan to their customers..
Pls keep in mind that ISP’s show their speed in Mbps or in Kbps and not in MBps or KBps (notice the difference between Capital “B” and Small “b”) “B” stands for bytes and “b” stands for bits.. Therefore 8 bits(b) is equall to 1 byte(B). So, 2Mbps(2048kbps) has to be divided by 8. Then u will get the answer as 256KBps(Kilo Bytes per sec).
Q.But still the users are not getting the 256KBps speed? Why?
Ans. Dont blame BSNL for this… It depends upon the server from which ur downloading.. If the server has the capability give the speed u will get upto 256 KBps.. for instance if u download a file from rapidshare.com, u wil get the speed around 80KBps to 160KBps. But if you download a file from filehost.ltstdl.com u will enjoy a speed between 200 to 240KBps. Try this site.. cooltoad.com. This site’s server provides only a speed upto 12Kbps..

Though i can download at an average rate of about 150KBps from other sites but not with rapidshare. Im feeling a great loss because of this. I Applied for BSNL Broadband 15 days back but still the connection is not given i stay in Pollachi near Coimbatore TN, when i call the Commercial Officer he says with pride that it will take 15 days, thats the same answer he gave me whil applying too, again he said 15 days, when we ask why he is never ready to tell the reason, i suggest that the Govt. should handover BSNL to some private service provider, since there is no Customer Service this wont work out, morover everyone are money minded, bribe for installation, processing everything, why do we need to go BSNL if there were someone else here, i suggest that Airtel VSNL, Reliance should come in to Pollachi, BSNL is good, but govt. officials always the same

Basically BSNL people doesn’t know how the DSL technology works and the funny part is they have a template start from1 -100…. for troubleshooting steps to reslove the customers issue(not in the call center in the exchange office), that’s the reason whenever you call the call center they are giving the phone numbers of the exchange people to call.
Currently I am using the 500 c plan which is ok for me but the billing is really worst. Be aware of the bill and call the call center 1500 to get the information what are the charges that they charged in your bill.
I am getting the download speed of 1710 kbps and upload is 357 kbps which is really good however when I am trying to download any application it is automatically reduce the speed due to contigency so I installed a good application in order to download the application too faster. Transfer limit is averagly reached 254 kbps, I mean recently I installed the Service pack 3 for my virtual machine which was having the size of 336 MB,normally it takes 3hrs 20 min to download but you can’t believe it I was downloaded in 20 minutes by using this poor BSNL broadband with my advanced application. To be honest that is highly impossible by using this BSNL broadband without any advanced technollogy, So I would like to inform to everyone that if any one needs to get my help regarding the technical part, just shoot the mail to me . I would like to help to fix your technical issue in your premises not in the outside of the premises that the poor BSNL will take care of that.

I rarely get speeds sell than 1.5 MBps . Even I get 2-8 free time and speeds even touch 1.99 MBps at that time.

Bsnl does not reduce the speed….i am using BSNL Unlimited For the past 1 yr and i still get 35-40 as an avg speed in the day n it even sumtimes hitz 150 in the night…….So u cant call that slow in any fucking way

But i agree that i disconnects a lot…but still,sify,tata have the worst customer care,reliance has low speeds…….so BSNL is better than all the connection….but it has problems……Thats it……….But its still the best

To my horrors,nowadays I get a speed of 15 – 30 KB/s in the free hours.
And the speed is above 100 KB/S in the charged hours.
Does anybody have any ideas? Please let me know.

the thing is (its fully my opinion and its not under the knife/gun threat) BSNL is wierd, i used BSNL for exactly 2 3 weeks. i was using vsnl, the service of vsnl sucked then back in 2004, then i switched to bsnl after 4-5 months of waiting. by then the erection for BSNL has pacified, then i switched back to VSNL, atleast a sort of working connection is better than sucking thumb and doing a nice wank atleast. then i disconnected VSNL and i got myself an airtel connection. things are fine since 2005 till date. just that my uncle asked me which broadband connection should he go for? BSNL or Bharti no Sify (they are extremely frustrated with sify and claim as worst service) or hathway. i am happy with 256 UL bharti just asking others experience. i will recommend airtel anyway, was asking other than airtel whats others might/might not want to suggest. service by airtel here is prompt and smoothly handled also.
imho BSNL really sucks, they got the best infra as of now, but they dont have the technical knowhow, and the internal politics in BSNL also sucks where “you need not fuck me, i will punch the fuck out of myself with my absurd retardism.” kind of policy exists. and the tech support outsourced and 1/2 people understand DNS and others need to be told DNS = DUMB NARROW-MINDED SWINE (via a friends place) as per DNS entry give out is illegal back in 2006 and 148 mins of struggle to make the BSNL engg broadband spit out the pri and sec DNS entry after kind of street hustle.
so i will ask uncle to take bharti but hell yeah, if anyone else shares similar horrible experience where you need to fight for 150 mins almost to JUST know DNS address at your friends place to browse the net at friends place. would be nice. i guess i can just point my fingers to this blog and spit it out. and one more pissed of attitude from BSNL? the customer support is the most rubbish, highly untrained and highly disorganised and highly retarded. agreed the landline service is good (well fingers crossed), but DSL or ADSL/2+ tech wise they are a decade or 2 away from the private sectors, they neither cheat nor they give support, they just blow the axe up with head, i heard people axing leg, BSNL axe’s its head. well thanks so much for the garbage ISP. even with NIB-II? they suck like a suckety ‘tards (retards).

i had Home-500 plan till june 08 but recently i switched to Home 750 UL…
i got my tel bill as 5000 rupees for the month of june…i checked my usage all seems to be in place excepth that i was not at home in june and nobody used the internet for that month..starnge…i complained to bsnl…in vain. What other method can i resort to?

hey pals.. see every company is working for its own profits.. even bsnl.. but i still feel its way better than any other broadband service provider in my city.. i live in jammu , J&K.. and i an using home 1350 unlimited plan.. earlier it was home 750 unlimited.. i never faced any problem with their commitment.. i am a heavy user of bandwidt. and i download gbs of data everyday.. mostly movies.. and i never got speed below 50-60 KBs anytime of the day.. which gives me an option to download around 4.5-4.8 GBs of data everyday… i have downloaded several blueray movies also… also my office plan of business2000 is contineously giving me a speed of around 210 KBs as i guess 8Mbs infrastructure is not yet set in here in my city… anyways i am still craving for more.. as my recent visit to australia shown me a net connection of 15 MBs on wireless and 25MBs on fixed lines…. and that also with a limit of 120 GBs for just around 1000 Indian rupees… man i really wish i could also get the same speed in my city ever…. thanks….

The bsnl is providing the broadband service with its lowest plan of Rs. 125/- but this is the trick of internet provider to just earn a lot from this short plan. This is because they are counting the pages which are opened during surfing as download and thus it adds a lot in the rental billing.

I have BSNL 2mbps broadband plan against Rs 1200 p.m. I am always getting 2 mbps. But, as result of which, my download limit used to exceed the limit prescribed by BSNL ie 8gb and I had to pay 0.80 per MB resulting in heavy loss to me. Now, I want a solution for reducing the speed of this plan by 512 kbps. Will it be possible?

BSNL broadband may have other problem, like it is not easy to get, less information at exchanges and so on. But my in-laws are using it for more that 2 years on Rs 250/1GB plan and has never got overbilled, because only time they use is when we talk on skype/yahoo. So your bill is according to your usage. If you are a heavy user, then go for unlimited plan and your bill will never go above that pre defined rate.

I am using BSNL broadband service for last 6 months.After looking at the
comments on broadband service provided by bsnl,I felt really bad for bsnl.
I registered for 500 plan and downloaded data size per month will be between 30 GB to 50 Gb.The download transfer rate was always between 180 KB/s — 210 KB/s(though never 256 KB/s(2Mb/s)) and it takes nearly 1 hr to download a 700 mb cd iso file. I always monitor data usage in bsnl website and never experienced any miscalculation.I just posted this comment to make new customers of BB service not horrified looking at
the comments here and things are not same everywhere.I recommend
anyone to try BSNL BB service first before any other service.Except some ( 1- 3 times per day) glitches like disconnecting during downloading – can be managed using a download manager application – and not so technically
sound but cordial customer care executies the service is great and can be given a try.
