so for branded computers, the disc image works great and you do not have to install anything manually. what's the big deal?
linux? weekly updates are as big as the size of the OS itself.
while i am updating linux, it would not let me install any application.
vista updates work fine in the background. you can ignore the need to restart by ignoring the prompt or performing a small task...
i worked fine today while windows update downloaded and installed 300 MB worth of updates (included the service pack for office 2007).
I am referring to the part where it says it needs to restart to apply updates, and then makes me wait thousands of seconds to apply the update.
And very few branded computers ship with good drivers. The wireless drivers - I don't know just why companies ship their own utility with drivers these days. Even the realtek sound drivers and many others, synaptic touch pad, etc. They all eat resources and screen real estate without any use for the average user. Finding good drivers is a pain in the ass. One of the best ways is to do a search of the VID and PID strings in DriverPack drivers and use that folder for driver installation. But only an advanced user can do this.
About linux updates being huge, well, hopefully Ubuntu LTS versions have fewer updates. :)
I challenge you to do a fresh install of Windows XP or Windows Vista without restarting a lot for driver installations and updates. What is the instant support answer for most support questions by volume? Restart.
You can buy a Mac and start working on it immediately. Buy a Windows computer and you have to go through a lot of nonsense before you can actually work on it. Pre-installed Windows has a lot of crap and it is a bad idea to use, that is a fact. So you do a fresh install of Windows, install drivers, install updates, install antivirus, /then/ you can finally work on it.
Macs are only supported on Apple computers. Do a fresh install of Mac OS X on an Apple computer, and the computer is ready. For some configurations, there are disc images that you can download and use them to do a fresh install of Mac OS X, and the computer is ready. Take Linux. For general office and home use, do a fresh install of Ubuntu on a computer, and the computer is ready. Updates will download in the background, and these OSes won't restart automatically without any warning to the user.
Updating Windows Vista is a headache. It keeps you waiting too long while applying updates, and you can't do anything else in the computer while it is updating itself. That just sucks. In no other OS does it take so long to apply updates while the user (or its processes) cannot do anything else.
