Texting

I cannot believe how much people use SMS messaging these days. Of course, I hate the amount of useless SMS messages I get on my own phone. I personally hate sending SMS messages to people I know. It has its uses and I use them for those situations only. The question is… Can you live without SMS messaging?

Text messaging has its pros and cons. The best thing about text is when you need to inform someone something but don’t want to bother them for half a minute or a minute in a call, you just use sms to send the info. It is also good for the receiver as he/she knows the info at his/her own time without getting disturbed.

It is also good when you want to share a short piece of text without having to repeat it verbally, or wait till the receiver is free and then repeat it verbally.

It is also good to check if a given person is free for a conversation. For example, if you thought you might have a verbal conversation with a friend at his/her work time, you can send a message asking if he/she is free; no reply would mean busy, a reply or a phone call would mean free. The above conclusion can also be reached by asking questions like ‘how are you?’; replies to such questions almost always mean the other person is free.

It can be used to have textual conversation, like when you don’t feel like giving so much thought, effort and/or time to talking, when you’re just not in a mood, or conditions prevent you from talking on phone, for example if speaking or holding the phone to your ear would invite undesirable attention, esp. from faculty/administration.

In some places like hospitals, it is quite useful to have silent rooms/halls, voice calls on phone would only disturb the silence.

But perhaps one of the most used situations in text messaging is when a class is going on and you feel like conversing with somebody over anything or something. Of course, that also means you’re tempted to use text messaging while a minor exam is going on and your phone is in your pocket, just waiting to be used.
