After Airtel, Tata Indicom announces Fair Usage Policy

Internet access in India is now under major threat. If you want to use it to its full potential, think again. The internet service providers in the country believe that you are being unfair to them if you use what you pay for.

After Airtel, Tata has announced their own fair usage policy. They now have limits on their unlimited broadband connections.

But unlike Airtel, they are not going to reduce your speeds… They are instead going to ask you to limit your usage or upgrade to a faster plan. If you do not pick one of the two options, they would cut your connection without any warnings.

And the funny thing about the Tata policy is that the more you pay, the less freedom you have to download using your internet connection.

And this is why I’m looking to start an ISP which provides decent speeds and no data limits (at least in Mumbai to start with, since that’s where I am). And at a reasonable price.

I’ve been living in Scandinavia for a few years and I’m really missing my ADSL 2+ (24MBPS, 100MBPS) and Cable (110MBPS) with no limits on data. I write now from an Airtel GPRS connection, and I weep every time I have to use it.

The challenge is buying the upstream: I can buy from either VSNL (Tata) or… I forget the other one, maybe BSNL or MTNL or something.

Yes we can’t go on shifting Providers or Plans to avoid it. We have to face it anyway.
