2 Days in Chandigarh

2 Days in Chandigarh

I have a few things to mention…

Rock Garden Sucks. It sucked already and they have done nothing to improve it.

Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh… It’s better than any other ‘tourist’ spot in Chandigarh. But they need to fix the parking problems at this place.

Pinjore Gardens… Reaching this place from Panchkula has become a painful experience. Jaypee Group is working on building a four lane expressway on the road between Zirakpur and Parwanoo and you can spend nearly 1-2 hours just to cover a short distance.

Another thing. Traffic cops in Chandigarh would take bribes to let you go. You just need to be lucky enough. And you do not even have to show any interest in doing so. They themselves would offer this easier alternative. Because paying the fine officially requires you to go to some government office and get a slip after paying the money to get your Registration Certificate back.

There are laws in Chandigarh which you have never heard off. Taking a left turn on a road that is open for traffic can cost you as much as Rs. 1800.

Well, the thing about Slip roads and Outside Chandigarh number plates is true. Had the same experience. I have been in Chandigarh for about 7 years and was not aware of this rule till I accidently missed a slip road and had to go the longer way. And, unluckily I was driving my Dad's car having a Punjab number plate. That was enough for the cops.
Can somebody rationalize these rules so that they make sense? Do we have a official place to voice against such idiotic rules.

Hahahaha... Nice representation... that is what is known as a slip road. It seems very cumbersome the first time you enter Chandigarh and you don't know about these rules but these slip roads are lifesavers. Drive around the city for a week and you'll know.

well yeah. we have these shortcuts in delhi too but it is always legal to take the longer way if you missed taking the slip road.

here in gurgaon. they can save a lot of hassles for us drivers if they make slip roads.

in fact on some major points, they started making the slip roads but then left them in between. so only bikers can drive on them. taking a car is going to break the car :D

Well if you're a local you would get away with it... I have missed these slip roads and take the longer way... maybe it was cause you had an outside number. Chandigarh cops need a reason. You overtake from the left and they are in a bad mood, they just might fine you!

I remember Gurgaon back in 1995-96.. I used to live in sector 17-B, the IFFCO colony. The place to hang out was Sector 14 and the only real development was near the DLF Qutub Enclave. Rest of the Gurgaon was dull... boring... poor infrastructure. Haven't been back since except for driving through a couple of times while going towards Jaipur or Dharuhera. The only good thing was that Vasant Kunj was nearby :) But I think things must've changed drastically there. Btw, does that theatre Payal still exist? :P

yeap payal is still open and shows movies. has avoided turning into a B-Grade movie hall.

Good graphics, rules are for our safety. Sometimes these simple rules can save lives and families. Unfortunately many of us sitting behind the steering wheels think nothing of rules. To those of you who have problem following traffic rules i would suggest visit Hyderabad once and see how people drive here... i know how it feels coz i have t face this hell everyday!

...and I almost forgot... the only thing that is an attraction in Chandigarh is the booze. Its cheap and its available at every kilometer.

yeah. beer shops are like everywhere :D i notice that everytime i drove from chandigarh to panchkula.

beer is cheap in goa. terribly cheap. even in hotels.

Rock Garden is well...... what can I say... I've been in Chandigarh since 20years and I've never visited it. Chandigarh offers nothing to the tourists. I really don't get it why people come here.

Cops take bribes but they really don't care anymore. They'll fine you as easily as they accept bribes. 2kmph above the speed limit and I had to pay Rs.700.

i was lucky with speed. i had no idea about the limits. i just got caught for taking a left on the red light for sector 17 market. i was supposed to take the cut which came a bit before.

Outsiders are targeted like contextual ads no doubt about that.

Traffic rules are pretty strict and the fines are as ugly as the cops here but I don't think there are any parking issues at Sukhna lake. They have ample parking space...may be it was rush hour that time..!!

And yes...Chandigarh poses the maximum traffic penalties than any other place.

Chandigarh administration should hand out a booklet of all the special rules to every outsider who enters the city at the border itself.

As for Sukhna Lake. It was a Saturday. And even Rock Garden's parking was full!
