Dell Inspiron 1520 Battery Problem Madness

I am not sure if any of you happen to own this particular model from Dell but I do.

The laptop is just around one year old. And the battery has already gone bad.

I assumed it was my working style which keeps the laptop on power practically all the time.

But when I went on to the Dell website to check out the prices of a new battery, I noticed a couple of things…

There is only one battery model available for this laptop (56 WHr 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Primary Battery).

All the reviews on this battery page points towards my problem. Battery becoming crap within the first year of use!

This makes me believe that Dell delivered a dud with this laptop when it comes to battery power. And since the model is now extinct, I have no choice but to pay Dell money every year for a new battery!

What a shame.

its been only 2 months i bought my dell inspiron laptop and i m facing problem with the battery which is not recharging .T here is no problem with the charger coz lappy is working properly with ac supply .can anybody suggest me what should i do in this case

my laptop battery power is so much low it is only around 35-40 min and message is displayed that is consider replacing your battery even in power saver mode and it has been taken only before 1 year.plz give me suggestion what should i do????

what a dud...If we are'nt satisfied with the product ,we wud not recommend it.

I hve got an acer ..its working fine older than dell...while dell like a dead duck..first its adapter got fusssss...and not rediculous battery..

dell sucks....and so do you :p

Battery has a life-cycle, about 500 times, include the original battery!

so if i charge the laptop once a day, the battery should still work fine for at least 1.5 years right?

Its probably not the battery but the AC cable. Dell has known issues with the AC power supply droping dead within a year.

yo i know that i messed with somthing with graphics or brightness but going from 4 hrs. to 20 mins is sad. thers someone out ther that know wat i did to mess it up i swear i messed around in media center but thers so much ive done to this thing. can some one help?

also am totally frustrated and disapointed with Dell's computers. I bought one for my son in high school only to find out after a little more than a year the battery doesn't hold a charge and then the power cord stopped working. I bought a cord on eBay for a fantastic price and now am looking for a battery.
All this to say... This is disgraceful on Dell's part. We waited 3 month to get the computer only to have this awful problem. I will never recomend Dell again. (which I had been doing)...

I faced similar problems with my Inspiron 1520.Worked fine for 9 months then suddenly started giving error message that your battery will die soon and it needs to be replaced.
I seldom use my battery and always run on AC power and I tried to explain the same thing to the support person. After a lot of explaining he talked to his manager and agreed to send me a new one :)

so the new battery last for another 9 months. what after that?

Just thought I'd mention the same exact thing happened to me, just after the 1 year mark and rather than shopping at Dell, I used a reputable computer parts store and got a brand new Inspiron 9 cell battery with warranty for less than $60.

I've also found that Kodak, although unrelated does the same thing with their batteries as I bought an EasyShare digital camera and that Li-ion battery ( same as Inspriron) just completely died on me...guess they figure they gotta keep getting your money somehow

if you open the dead battery up, you will find 6(six) AA rechargable batteries , 1.5v each. You can buy the batteries locally and just replace the batteries. I will make ablog post on this soon.

how do u open up the battery

This has happened to me. The thing is, I have to have it plugged in for it to still work, as I am doing now, but, if I unplug it, it just turns off! I don't know about anyone else, but, I can't afford 100 some-odd dollars to pay for another battery.

here is a place where you can complain. if you get lucky, dell might help you out!

my dell inspiron 1520 has got the same problem... though the battery used to perform pretty decent till about 10 month from purchase (2 and half hour +) it has suddenly started dropping and has gone below 40 minute even in power saver mode... shelling out money every year for buying a new battery is absolutely beyond me....
uggghhh DELL!!!!

I would have escalated the issue to Michael Dell himself if my laptop gave a battery backup of 50 minutes and the spec said 4 hours. Battery backup going from 50 minutes to 20 minutes in one year with vista is not at all surprising to me.

call up dell.
-tell them you called around 15th sep to inquire about the battery problem in general. say you did not log a service call(or give tag no.)
-then say that the customer rep said the battery was fine and closed the conversation.
-say battery is meant to last 4 hours, not 20 min. If dell had been sincere and behaved responsibly, I could have solved this problem then itself. Again, be polite but firm. Escalate to the manager.
-Make them feel guilty for not having responsible customer service in the first place. Ask for a solution to your problem. Don't directly say you want a new battery. Make them feel guilty enough to send you a new battery.

from getsatisfaction, it looks like i made a mistake not complaining before september 20. the 10 day gap is going to cost me big i guess here.

the best backup i got from this machine was around 50 minutes. it's down to 10-15 minutes now. :P

i have not called in to dell yet because the battery is not REALLY DEAD. from day one i have got crappy backup from the battery. maybe because i use vista with aero at full performance. it also gets very hot after little usage so i believe that also kills the battery faster.

i am not sure if i can ask for a replacement for a battery which is not really dead yet but would be in a couple of weeks i guess.

If you have a 3 yr nbd, the battery might also be covered by the warranty. I enquired the price of a 6 cell battery for my dell d600 a month back from a computer dealer here in blr, it was around 2800-3500 Rs. Go to a computer dealer who's speciality is laptops. They will be able to give you a far better price.

Otherwise try this

I would be thorougly pissed if my battery went dead on me after only a year. I have one dell c610(6 years old) with a 40 min battery. dell 600m(4.8 years) with 1.5 hour battery and dell d600(4+ years) and 2+hours battery.

After the battery fire fiascos last year, lg chem and sony are having difficulty keeping with demand. Thus prices have gone up.

When did you contact dell about the battery? Is sep 20 the exact date? If you called them before the warranty expired, you can escalate this issue to the manager. Even otherwise, tell Dell that I tried calling you but nobody took responsibility on this issue. Ask to speak to their manager. Be polite but firm. I have a feeling that something can be worked out.

Just change cells of the existing battery. Buying new battery for laptops is never worth it. Even more so now due to "battery shortage" and high prices.

More than continuous use, the wear cycles are more important in deciding if the battery has died on you prematurely. Dells are generally better in the battery department. Some of the budget Compaqs and Acers are pretty ordinary (battery life wise). I've faced no issues so far on the Dell laptops in my family. The 9-cell one on my existing one still continues to give over 4 hours battery life :)

For your 6-cell battery, replacing cell would cost you around 3-4k.

Hi Sourabh,

I also have the same problem that my Inspiron 1520 battery has conked out within 15 months. What is this cell replacement thing that you are advisisng? How so u do it? The new 9 cell battery cost 11k, i asked the call center today. Please help.

Nabaneet

i can actually get a decent UPS system for the entire house in that price! :D

Great. here are the local prices!

A spare battery 6 cell for your laptop model would be Rs.10, 200/- Exclusive of taxes.

A spare battery 9 cell for your laptop model would be Rs.15, 100/- Exclusive of taxes.

duh. it was purchased on 20th September last year. so one year has passed. so the battery is unlikely to be covered under the warranty!

i have a three year NBD. i have to check the exact date of purchase. they do mention that batteries might not be covered under warranty.

I assume your model is out of warranty. What's the local cost of the battery? Get your battery tested if possible.
