It really sucks to have this going on. I just bought myself this. Their are better ways to bring some money in especially considering they are now supported by CNet.com!
If I had enough money, I had buy this too…

I don’t understand why this is so bothersome to a WP user. This isn’t going to change anything for me..like I will not stop using WP. It might be wrong what happened, but has Matt said why he had did it?

This bothers me as a WP user coz I link to WordPress from all my sites using WordPress. Not becoz I have to but because I credit WordPress with what they have done.
My linking to them helps them pick a better PageRank. What they did was wrong coz they did not inform me that they were pretty apparently selling their PR for money. It is their website ofcourse. But it is a community based project and we as WP users ought to know what our efforts are being used for.
I ofcourse won’t stop using WP. I won’t ofcourse stop linking to WP.org. I ofcourse still like Matt for what he did to the Blogging scenario. But, what was done with the WordPress.org site was absolutely pathetic.

Here is another example which has worked nicely. Opera sells browsers but also gives them for free. So, they need money as well .They use their website to promote sponsors for a fee. But their links are visible and clearly marked. Example:
