An Open Letter to Dr. Manmohan Singh

I saw your national telecast justifying the hike in the fuel prices.

Since we have no other alternative but to pay for the fuel… I guess I would not complain about that.

But I have other things to complain about.

It’s understandable that the oil companies in India are finding it hard to provide fuel at the prices we are used to.

But it is not understandable on what you are doing to improve the quality of the fuel itself, in addition to transportation and other forms of losses like evaporation.

I agree you need the taxes on petrol and diesel which you cannot further reduce.

What I want to know is that why is it still rare to find good quality roads outside the major cities. Even in metro cities like Delhi NCR, the roads inside localities are in terrible position.

You found a new lucrative form of tax (Service Tax). It’s bringing in millions of rupees to you. What are you doing to help these new tax payers?

Have you got any policies to enhance the quality of broadband and other raw materials to these new generations of industries?

What about power supplies? Clean drinking water? Food? Education? What is the situation with that?

I am sure you have enough funds to do something about these problems!

Or perhaps you are spending that money on subsidies on kerosene which is used for all the nasty purposes. Or diesel which is used by people from the higher salary class who can afford diesel cars.

Expensive petrol but cheaper diesel hurts the common man. Because he is the one traveling on scooters and bikes and cheap small cars which are only available in petrol.

Agreed you have to keep diesel cheap for commercial transportation which is the backbone of our supply system.

Why cannot you develop a system where commercial vehicles get the subsidized fuel but not the private owners? Oh crap. I forgot that you guys suck at implementation of policies.

Maybe, we should all depend upon public transport to save some fuel.

Wait… Public Transport. That means dealing with auto rickshaw walas who charge a premium despite the government rulings against that. That means traveling in rattling buses which would never be on time or reach the destination on time. That probably means traveling in the Metro. Oh wait, it is limited to just some parts of one city at this point of time.

Are you making sure that the Metro system would be capable of handling the traffic it would face 10 years from now? Please tell me that you are!

I can see that efficiency on the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway which has been a disaster for commuters.

Coming back to fuel and cars. Why are you not providing subsidies to automakers which are developing vehicles powered with alternative sources of energy?

Why are you not giving due credit to Reva which makes the only electric only car in India?

Why are their cars as expensive as Maruti Alto or Hyundai Santro when they can be a lot cheaper than that?

Why is it that the Tata Nano (a petrol powered car) is hailed as the future of Indian transportation? Why not Reva?

Of course, Reva uses power supplies for energy which is also short in supplies.

Why are you not investing in nuclear fuel power stations? What is the problem in that? Maybe that unsigned agreement with the US government is the problem here.

One last question. Why are you charging Honda 100%+ taxes for importing their Civic Hybrid? They are doing us a favor by bringing in their latest technology… Why are you not encouraging them?

I need some answers.
