I must be the only person in this world who would prefer to save files in RTF format instead of ODF or DOC or DOCX.

Yes u can,

I have seen/used technical diagrams upto an extent atleast in plain ascii

like http headers or tcpi ip packet design u can do it in ascii

Another great thing about ASCII is you can read the file from a terminal without any special programs.
