Okay okay,
I love my RD again. It does get kinda irritating when you spend more than 2K on the bike, it sounds beautiful, rides like a dream - but just dies half way home; and you can’t get her to start again; AND you have to push.
I’ts even more irritating to discover that the cause is a single broken wire under the seat which I could have spliced together in 2 minutes and ridden home for a permanent fix.
But we’re good now…
Mileage is up from 14 to 18 and still counting…

I am a new RD350 owner. It’s my first bike and I had a fun summer on it last year, although it doesn’t take off or stop all that well. This year it won’t even start. I imagine that if I can get it started once and everything moving again, it should be okay. Any tips?

Hi guys!! i’m planning to buy a rd 350 but i’m new to it, so i’ll need some valuable tips on what to look for before buying the bike..
Also pls help me on these points:
1. mechanics have been suggesting 2 prices - approx. 17K for a regular second hand bike) or 33K(which they claim is a completely rebuilt bike). I’m confused which category to aim for.
2.Someone did recommend Joga Motors in karol bagh but i’ve heard they also sell single carb. RDs which are useless. Are Joga Motors a reliable source??
PLEASE HELP!!!

umm.. delhi ppl..
NO joga Motors please!
he picks up ****** up RD’s for around 7-8K, spends about
Rs 2,800 on a complete chassis Paint and Complete body
re-chrome including nick-nacks! locally sourced second hand
cylinder kits, puts in locally sourced cheap spares [they are in
karol bagh, ya know!] and what you have are mostly LT models
that cost him just about 15-18k, and then he sells em off to
newbies for around 35k+ to even 46k!!
i would say if you have decided to get a cool looking, awesome
sounding, “superbike” to enhance your personal appeal.. ****** OFF!
this onez not for you!
but if you are looking to purchase a genuine 350cc twin pot, twin
exhaust “Giant-killer” that outruns 600/700cc bikes, sounds
like a rabit pitbull on rampage, and makes it to 160kph’s like an
ethereal ride through all of 6 gears.. then you’re all set mate!
but you dont buy a Yamaha RD350 and be done with it. The process
never truly ends. It begins somewhere, but never ends anywhere.
Its a continuous part-time job for you. It begins with ‘building’ your
yamaha 3fiftee and then continues forever till as long as you want
to ride the blue smoke beast. Its a constant journey of sourcing rare
spares, overlooking unreasonably regular expenses and learning to
talk to your bike
you need to understand even before you buy a 3fiftee that she aint
someone born yesterday. its probably gonna be a machine, well past
her prime. prob more than 12 years old, for the one you get your hands
on.
give her the respect an ol timer deserves. understand the fact that she
runs today for you, not coz it needs to, but coz you want it to. So the
onus of keeping one running is on you.
every time she stalls, dont ****** yell at her! dont ya dare ****** cuss
at her! Smile. tell her “aww..cmon sweetheart.. what now?”, then shut up
and haul her 180kilo self to the nearest reliable mechanic [or put it on
a bloody tempo truck and take her to your "own" mechanic] and treat
her like you would pamper your girlfriend, even when she is being
unreasonable!
thats how you keep a yamaha RD350 man!
so lemme tell ya what! go fish for a screwed up 350!
look for one, that has absolutely no damage to its chassis.
look for lack of dents on its bodywork. look for maximum original
spares on it. haul it over to a reliable known 350 mech/garage.
get a chrome + chassis paint job done on the whole bike. go
hunting all over town lookin for whatever spares she is missing..
no matter how rare they are or hard to find.
get your hands [or your mechanic's hands if he is trusted] on a good
cylinder kit. You’d most likely get used cylinder and pistons. They
are ok as long as your trusted mech vouches for them, and they
have run 1000-1500k at the max!
Get a new battery, hunt for a new battery charger! see if you can
find a company original battery charger, or settle for Honda Activa
chargers, they seem to work.
get a new Wiring set for the bike. change the whole damn set. Costs
approx rs 200-250 man! get new tank lids/kick stands/kick lever/
instrumentation/switch-gear or whatever needed!
BUILD your own 350 man! you’ll end up spending some 20-25k
on it this way! Run-in the new cylinders and pistons yourself, and then
mate, you’ll have yourself a true 25k Yamaha RD350! you’ll know
your babe inside out then, and you’ll have the upper hand when having
to deal with road side mechanics in case of an emergency,
dont ****** buy a 35-40k 3fiftee from Joga man!
.. well thats what i think

oh and by the way..
Chauhan Autos, near Nizamuddin Railway Station [the Sarai Kale Khan Bus Terminal side] is one of the best known 350 garages. The Owner Chauhan, worked for Escorts when the Yamaha RD350 was released, and has been witness to her induction, and her subsequent failure in the indian industry. He has overseen the testing, manufacturing and marketing procedures for the bike till its withdrawl. [He also has some choicest of words to say about this one Senior of his back then, whom he hold responsible for the failure of the bike]. Chauhan, now all old and white haired has had the honor of test driving a brand new stock RD HT for the company over a distance of 4,200 km’s across calcutta, for mileage and other tests!
Another good resource, which is well connected and is visited a lot by bullet purists, cross-country firangs and people lukin for mod-jobs for bullets is “John’s” at Pandara Road, located very close to the outer circle of India Gate.

hey guys…i recently found an RD 350 in my colont…the poor beast jst standing thr..i’ve wanted 1 for very long..bt my parents won’t buy me 1bike b4 graduation..n that’s the only time u cn really fuel ur passion…hw much shld i b paying 4 this 1…+hw much wud all the ovrheads..spares/wiring/cylinder etc cost me…also what’s the best mileage i cn expect from it..n the fact tht petrol isnt gettin any cheaper..
May 11th, 2006 at 04:38 am
hey Sumedh. pick up the rd for something like 5-8k Max depending upon condition of chassis, spares [indicators, footpegs, exhausts etc]. I wrote a bit about the costs involved in building up an RD from scratch above on this page only. you might get a rough idea from that.
And Dude! 9kpl to 14Kpl is the fule mileage you can expect, depending on whether its an LT[Low Torque] or HT [High Torque], and ofcourse engine condition of the bike.
Minez an HT and gives me 9-10kpl [without AC :p] but honestly.. its nothing to complain about. I dont make mucho munny.. but i still feel i get my bang for the buck.
May 11th, 2006 at 04:42 am
that is pretty close to how much my swift gives me!
May 11th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
if your swift is new, its eventually gonna give you more than that for sure. My Palio 1.6 GTX has done just about 2 years, and it gives me 9-10kpl [frikkin with or without AC] and i know it wont give any better. But even the 100Bhp GTX does not go to 100kph like the RD does, and thats that!
Hey btw.. dya know about the new 1.6 120BHP swift thats on its way?! looks fkkin hot man! low pro tubeless’s, dual Aston Martin style Exhausts, Frontal Chicken Mesh air dams and what not man! though at 6.5Lacs i doubt Maruti will find buyers outside their own immediate families.
a 120BHP 1.6 isnt gonna give much mileage eitherways. i dont know what maruti’s trying to do.. but its surely worth waiting and watching..

Hey guys!! I’ve just bought a 84 RD 350… on 5th june..
This is the bike i always wanted…. fell in love with her when i was in school..
My love for her has only increased since the day she came home…
She ran nicely the 1st day.. but didn’t start the next mornin… had no clue as to what went wrong . Then i took an off, went to Chauhan motors.. was told — its the battery…. Got the new battery.. & she’s running fine again!!
Now I just need 2 take it to him for the service & repairs.
Bikadawg has rightly said .. that the process actually starts after u buy a Rd.. Its a continuous process of restoration, expenses,Improvement leading 2 immense satisfaction..
This bike needs & deserves respect.. find the solution to the problem and not cuss!!
Nice write up man!!!!

Guys,
If there were such a thing as a speed monster that gave you good mileage we would all be laughing wouldn`t we. So before you start cribbing about how close the mileage of an RD is to that of 1960 fiat padmini you probably own, think about the other stuff which by this time you would have conveniently forgotten. Let me dispense my gyan and jog your memory-
a. Can your premier padmini do a 100kmh on 3rd gear, i think not, the maximum operational speeds is 100kmph on 4th gear (i.e if you are not already dead by the engine induced vibrations someone can validate this for me)
b. Just the raw guttoral sound of the RD 350 should give you a hard on. The padmini starts with this oil curdling whine and then settles down into what sounds like a bad diesel engine.
c. The lineage of a RD-race derieved should not leave you second guessing about the pedigree of the bike, what pedigree does a padmini have?
So next time you start comparning mileages of a car and a RD, one sincere piece of advise DON`T.
Else buy yourself a honda activa and sing paens about the mileage it gives you and how low maintenance it is.
July 1st, 2006 at 03:18 am
amusing. really amusing.
comparing a RD350 with a premiere padmini.
almost insulting.
July 4th, 2006 at 07:57 pm
Hmmm, so what u drive is humble, pitiful mileage bikes, so weak, so pitiful, well that is what u r if u think that bikes are cool, u know what i mean, 100 odd cc 4-stroke bikes. Well dude u can do better with a bicycle, at least u need guts to ride a cycle, look at me, here I am, zipping on my Yamaha RD350 cc, hmm now that is a bike! It is not ur fault if u cant ride that one, because it is not u who chooses a RD350, it is the Rd350 which chooses its rider. Soft guys with heart melting soft smooth bikes, wow do i see u on track suite after ur morning walk on a 4-stroke, wow so non-pollution guy, pity urself, dump that and get something with 6 gears 40 bhp, hmmm now means u need to have lots of money, which sucks u all inside out, well u better off on kootchie kootchie 4-stroke. See the whole road eating dirt while u zoom on a 350, cruising beyond 3-figure speed while ur heart pounds with pure passion, not for u guy, u better off. People move out, they can be killed, or what is that now abt danger, risks, now that is what a rider is. U sleep when u die, till then u need to oil ur gears, bye for now

hey all you Rd MaNiAcS,
I was just surfing web and got this web page. I am owner of 1986 HT since last 5 year. The only thing I will say is that, to enjoy you moments with RD you have to have relation exactly like a jockey and his horse.
I am proud to know my RD and hence enjoy real long drives on it. She never ditched me in between of my ride.
Have recently travelled from Nagpur-Pune-Mumbai.
Oh !! forget to tell you all I am from Mumbai and you can contact me on nomadic-rider@lycos.com
Atlast a woe to the machine which is powerful as God and inherits a demon within.

Hi Guys,
I’m a RD freak myself. Got a 84 model, recently got a set of standard cylinders put on my bike. The bike is a babe with a mind of her own and you’ve got to handle her sweetly (the way you’d probably handle your girl when her tmprament is not within control ;)). However the bike, I’ve found in my past 4 years of riding, has amazing handling capabilities. So if we are head over heels for the bike then we deserve to be - “Don’t feel bad. You’re not the first 750 rider to get blown off by a Yamaha 350″.

hi ashwani
its been long since i got my bike to you, and now since im residing in chdg, things have never been same with her - no skilled ones here. she gives out this clinking sound from the cyl head when revd up, though i had got all done up including paint job but itsnt satisfying. i love this bike of mine, and she’s been with me for over 10yrs now and still looking new. pls advise as why the battery drains out after few days of running, i had got original charger fittted and was working well till now. i wonder if cylinder assembly is available and can be renewed, i want her to run like she did, do advise so i can get her to you.

Hi to all,
Last September I bought an RD350 LT model from Joga Motors for 30k. I didn’t know that Joga motors are this much fraud people. The machine gave me troubles one day or the other. Main problem was its engine oil leakage, petrol leakage. It also gave jerks - when you are in speed and suddenly wants to stop it gave tremendous jerks which shows that the machine is in bad shape. After much depression and tension, l I sold it in April this year to Joga itself for 23k. Now I came to know that Chotu in Satya Niketan has good RDs. Also Chauhan Motors near Nizamuddin Railway Station. Is any good HT RD for sale? Pls email me at arijm@rediffmail.com

hi there
to all you rd lovers out there, well i wanted to share something with you guys and girls well i got a friend whos doing automobile engineeing he asked me for an advice on a sports bike so i adviced him rd 350 to him and hes happy with that he got an 86 original from head to toe some money was putted on to it thenit just sings fine. but he had a proble, with its milage so we figure out a simple but yet difficult experiment. it is from this experiment 350 waseither going to survive or die,as we putted an fi( fuel njection) system to both of its pistons with an ingreted chip for the mixture purpose. and now its the best bike that any one can have i just ddrove this baby on a noida toll brige in delhi on 150km/ph constant and it took it like it was meant for this.now this baby gives a mileage of about 29-35 km/pl depending on driving.
so guys and gals its a old horse so dont only put the same thngs in it you need to figue out some new ways to amke this legend not only survive but to make its presence felt on roads while driving in between a pack of sports bike
the next step is that we are going to add some disc brakes on it but we r planning to get an ABS chip too so that it works fine .
a word of advice to all you junkies that in case you are a wind chaser and like to put youself for test at high speed then do add some weight in your chassis as this baby runs high but doesnt stay straight and stable after 120km/ph.

hey!!!I dont own a rd350…but ive graduated from an enfield to an rd as maah ultimate bike…as far as karol bagh is concerned..some of them have some real fast machines…i remember seeing a yamaha rd650 rare there….but the real way to buy an rd is too buy it from junk n then get it fixd…it comes out cheaper n betta..as most ppl use the fake parts or rather famously refered as agra parts…which destroys the bike…n ride become sleazy in a couple of months…n thats not what people expect from a RD….so guys Restore ur own bike…the feel of making ur own RD is different….

Hey Guys,
RIDE an RD like U’ve stolen it !
lol had a friend of mine who had just come back from Mumbai and was boasting his brains off about a Kinetic hyosong Comet that he rode and insisted that it would thump the RD in and out . Unfortunately I dont have my RD where I am right now to display its RAW uncomparable power to him BUT managed to pull up specs on the net and compared them with him after which I could see his tail tucked deep between his legs and slink away.
NOTHING LIKE AN RD

October 4th, 2006 at 12:36 am
Hi Vijay ,
You could contact Joe in Bangalore for a good RD. Taking into consideration all mechanics well atleast in B’lore wud like to make a fast buck to which i suggest U take a friend or basickly someone who has a good knowledge of RD’s along with u to have a look at the bike. I dont have his no right now on me but if U like will give it to U when I log on next . Pls expect to spend a decent amount for an RD in a good condition.
Cheers hic !!

hi guys - had an rd350HT for over a decade - sold it when i got married (couldn’t have two lady-loves, you know) - but am looking for one right now.
excellent to see a forum like this - thought rd-lovers were a dead breed, so was pleasantly surprised to see so many of us are out there.
well - thanks to the numbers given above - managed to contact chotu a few minutes ago - says he may get a couple of machines in a week - is busy restoring 3 bikes right now which people have already paid for - but he quoted 50k for the beast - is that his going rate, or is that negotiable ? would appreciate some help on this. also - does he always have an adequate stock of spares ?
also appreciate if somebody can give me chauhan’s number.
cheers
OT
October 13th, 2006 at 07:28 pm
Hi OT,
Chotu’s number is 011-24351230. I would appreciate if anyone could help me out in getting an RD350HT.

Hey Guys ,
Am too sure @ what rate a GOOD 350 sells in other cities BUT in bangalore the going rate is 55+ ie for a GOOD bike - non sleeved bore .
I do know that for sure cuz I picked one for 58 in an awesome condition. The only non original part were the indicators. Had picked it up from an uncle of mine and believe me even if he had quoted 70 I would have picked it up - Thankfuly he didnt
FYI - U can use yamaha raptor 400 carbs for the 350. Mikuni twin carb . Have also heard that u could use the pistons used on a yamaha raptor 400 for the 350. Not completely sure about that but when I do visit the yamaha shwrm next would check it out def keep U posted.
cheers hic!
forgive me but I get an instantaneous high just by thinking of an RD 350 and am sure it isnt just me who faces this torque inducted testosterone on wheels rush

I own an RD 350 (from Rajdoot-Yamaha), which I purchased from the Company (yes, the company shop bang opposite the factory in Faridabad) on September 07, 1983. I still use the bike (sparingly, though) and she has clocked over 50000 kms. Still in Mint and Original condition, she is on the Original Paint, Original Chrome, Original cables (all), Original bulbs (even the meter bulbs) and every single screw and nut bolt that came straight out of the factory is AS IS. Save for a set of tyres and a couple of CB points, everything is ORIGINAL. Wish I could post pics for all to see. Boy, do I LOVE her !!!

October 27th, 2006 at 09:57 am
Hey you all, great to know their is a contineous on going Rd lovers out their. I had purchased my 1981 Rd 350 6 months ago and i drive her hard; when purchased she only had 29,000 kms on her now she is at 33,
still starts first kick everytime my mechanic thinks I should rebore her because of minor ticking. What do you think? One other question, how many miles should I get on a full tank of gas in the city doing wheelies all the time and reving the crap out of her?
October 27th, 2006 at 05:27 pm
Hey fellow fans of the Rd 350, I may be among the lucky few who owns an Rd by paternity i.e more like father to son, I love it and have been riding on this bike ever since I was 2years old, Kinda makes me a true Rd lover!! The look of the bike has changed over the past few years with the chrome mudguards being replaced with the new plastic ones seen on most bikes today! A points bike with a rebored engine just once still grinds down our street like it always did!! As always said the bike shadows its rider!! People look out for the front & rear disk breaks available for the bullet which fits beautifully on this beast who is waiting to be tamed!! And hey if ur bike dose’nt start try putting a few drops coconut oil around circumference of the ignition key, trust me it works.. dad’s been doing this since the past 10years!

the yamaha ybx has two versions in engines… one is with the adjustor that came with the yd 125 and other , the raw engine, the very first model. the yd 125 which grew into ybx later has a peculiar problem of “knocking” at around 45 kilometers… the best one can do is to tune the engine as and when this develops. the older engine version however, does not face this. as a biker, the best you can do is to idle your bike in the morning and listen to its engine sound and see whether the knocks exist then also.

hello Jimmy,
thankx for that advice regarding YBX ,I have YBX 2001 model, the thing which i have done is i replaced my piston cylender kit (RS 3000) from yamaha Genuine parts, it seems that probelm is solved i am not sure coz since at this initial stage i am not running my bike above 40 KMPH i will see when i will complete 700-1000 KM on new piston kit, i had to replace by piston head n cylender coz the kick of the bike was not having any preasure , also changed new clutch plate, now running fine , lets see what happens.
Will update you later.
BYE n THANKX
