Hi there. My name is Rachel and I work at Dell. After reading your post, I checked with some of our Dell tech experts, and they said that the Dell Support Center icon on your system tray (at the bottom right of your computer screen) lets you know that the application is running in the background. The “always on” approach allows Dell to provide you with up to date communication about the latest bios, drivers and downloads specific to your hardware, which in turn, enables your system to run more efficiently.
Make sense?
By the way, Dell is working really hard to listen more to customers and make changes and improvements based on their feedback. If you have additional thoughts about this or anything else related to Dell products or services, we welcome your input. This link will connect you to several sites, including the Dell blog, community forum and IdeaStorm, where you can propose ideas and customers can vote on their favorites.

thanks! it was more of a personal opinion. sometimes you just need to close applications running in the background to gain system resources… and this is why an exit option would have been great~

I just installed Dell Support Center. It seems ok and pretty nice…BUT… Now, every time I boot up (Win XP), the folder “C:\Program Files\Dell” opens up in a window. This is more of a nuisance than a problem. How can I turn this off?
November 18th, 2007 at 02:41 am
Hal,
I’m having the same problem with the “C:\Program Files\Dell” folder popping up every time I start up my Inspiron laptop. I also have Windows XP and this only started happening after I “upgraded” to the Dell Support Center 2.0. Did you find a solution yet?
November 19th, 2007 at 01:22 pm
I was having the same problem, but I found a solution from Dell. Here’s the link that describes the problem and the resolution -
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=3E47CDE67555482DE040A68F5B286A72&journalid=8496A17A8ED311DC949DEDCB6DDF6FD6&Query=&SystemID=&ServiceTag=&contenttype=-1&os=-1&component=-1&lang=-1&doclang=en&toggle=false
Basically, the Dell Support Center have to be version 2.0.0.07311. If not, you will need to uninstall, then download and reinstall the latest version.
Hope this helps.

I also found a solution. Click on the Start menu, click Run, type in “msconfig,” a box will appear, click on the Startup tab, and un-check the Dell box(es). Restart and a System Configuration warning box will pop up. Just check the box that says something like “Don’t show this message again.” And that should do it.

Thank you, Tim. I did as you suggested and unchecked item “dsca”. Now I still get the alerts but not the folder opening at each logon.

Sushubh: I hear ya. And we appreciate your feedback. In fact, I shared your comments with our planning/development team for future consideration. BTW, for some reason, one of the links I sent in my original post didn’t come through. If you’d like to share any of your comments/suggestions about Dell products/services on the Dell blog, community forum, IdeaStorm, etc., here’s the link: http://www.dell.com/conversations. Thanks!
Hal: In regards to your “nuisance” issue, I checked with our Dell support team, and they said there was a folder patch that was pushed out last Friday night (11/16). The next time you sync, Dell Support Center will be updated and you shouldn’t have this issue again. Hope that helps!
November 21st, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Thank you Rachel. I used Tim’s solution on only 1 machine. I have other Dell machines with this issue so I’ll wait for the “sync”.

the folder issue i think is limited to xp machines. i did not face that problem!

I agree – the System Tray icon should have an ‘Exit’ or ‘Hide’option. The ‘always on’ option should be under the control of the PC user and should not be default. I disabled two Dell items in the Startup menu – ‘sprtcmd’ and ‘dsca’ and the tray icon is gone!
I can now run Dell Support Center from Start/Programs when I wish. I notice that in the Support Center under ‘About Your System’ I get ‘this content is no longer available’. Is this normal?

Hi I have version 2.0.07311, but my problem is that my boot up time has been greatly extended since installation. I would like to either remove support center or at least have it under my control. How can I do this safely, as I tried to uninstall but it would not work.

Re: Dell Support Center 2.0
I am reading on the Dell website: There are known issues with the October 31st release of Dell Support Center 2.
No kidding!
I received a “pop-up” from Dell Support, indicating that I should download and install Dell Support Center 2.0.
After I installed Dell Support Center 2.0, my computer froze. It would not boot properly; it would not load or open programs; if programs opened they would not work; and I could not print.
Of course, I finally figured it out, and uninstalled, and hopefully removed all references to Dell Support Center 2.0.
Now what? Do I trust Dell again? If I do, do I uninstall the old Dell Support, before installing Dell Support Center 2.0.
If I choose NOT to trust Dell, do I uninstall the old Dell Support anyway?
December 12th, 2007 at 03:26 pm
My issue is that the old Dell Support is still on my computer. Why was it not removed when the new version installed. Annoying. Thanks for the info on disabling on start. I don’t like having applications pre-load.
December 12th, 2007 at 03:44 pm
the alert message specifically told that you would have to manually uninstall the old edition of the software.
December 16th, 2007 at 02:48 am
I still have Dell Support… and it keeps telling me to get Dell 2.0.
Also, I have tried installing 2.0. But it tells me that my system isn’t a dell. And I’m pretty sure I have a Dell. So, what exactly can I do… do I have to get it? What if I want to continue with the old one?

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 and have recently downloaded Dell Support Centre but it will not recognise that I am connected to the Internet and will therefore not work, has anyone else had this problem and have they a cure?
December 28th, 2007 at 04:14 pm
It appears that Dell Support Center 2.0 is crapware that just runs forever, never even finishing installing…
December 31st, 2007 at 01:58 am
After trying many things to remove Dell Support Center 2.0, which refused to install because the previous version of DSC could not be removed, I use Smarty Uninstaller Pro 2007 and it uninstalled DSC. I have decided to wait a few months, after I see some positive posts on DSC, before I install Dell Support Center 2.0.

Mine also says that I’m not connected to the internet with my Dell Dimension 5150
January 14th, 2008 at 06:22 am
I have the same problem as Tommy. Dell Support Center (DSC) 2.0 says, under the “Alerts” tab, “No Internet Connection Detected,” even though under the “About Your System/System Information/Network” tab it clearly shows my network connection is up, running, has the correct IP address, DNS servers and gateway.
Software that isn’t even internally consistent is junk!!!!

I just installed DSC 2.0.07311 and now it doesn’t recognise my inspiron 6400 - it doesn’t give me my service tag id nor my express service code. It’s from a 29MB file (R171755.exe) dated 16 Nov, 2007, which means it probably hasn’t been updated since you all reported your problems. I checked the add-remove programs utility and it doesn’t have the old version listed. I just bought this sucker and the old version of DSC was working fine!

my xps 1330 keeps crashing off and on does not permit Powerpoint videos to run in show and auto deletes my dvd drive and requires constant reinstallation
January 24th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
I also had problems with the Dell Support Center. I uninstalled the older version and then downloaded the latest version. When I tried to install it the installer said “This is not a Dell System” and warned that it may not work. I still installed the application and when I opened it , I see a blank window. Apparently the old version removed something in my system that identifies it as a Dell Inspiron 530. Now I cannot get the Dell on-line web-based checkup to work either because it thinks my system is not a Dell. Also, I am not able to open flash on my IE7 on Vista Home Premium. I have tried everything on the earth, but still it won’t work. I have contacted DELL call center but they were not able to solve both the issues. Can anyone help ??
January 25th, 2008 at 05:40 pm
Hi, I was able to solve the Flash not working in IE7 on my Inspiron 530 with Vista Premium. I just right clicked on my IE7 icon on my desktop and run it as a administrator and guess what….Flash started working !!!!. Dell support did not know this !!!
January 31st, 2008 at 09:21 pm
Has there been any solution to the ‘This is not a Dell system’ message on installation of the DSC? I installed the software reluctantly today, because the old Dell Support was no longer supported, and this was the first message which popped up. It says not all functionality will be present.
What functionality will I be missing? Is there a patch? Has Rachel@Dell vanished now forever…?
For info, my laptop is an Inspiron 6400 running Vista - which qualifies as a Dell system, I would have thought?

I purchased a dell inpiron 530s which came with both(!) dell support and dell support center. the DSC refused to work several times while the dell support kept popping up. finally loaded on a separate user account but refused to work on administrator account. dell support prompted me to download support center and uninstall dell support which I did and the new system is working!
February 11th, 2008 at 06:34 pm
I removed the sprtcmd and dsca from the startup and solved my problem.

Each time I receive the pop up window “To Install Dell Support Center 2.0″ and subsequently open my PC load it I receive a message from Symantec that states “malicious script detected” and recommends shutting down. I then have to perform a system restore to rid 2.0. I tried disabling Symantec, reloading 2.0 and the same thing has occurred. Tried India and the woman there got my PC so screwed up I again had to perform a system restore and now just hit the “remind be later” pop up for 2.0. anyone had any similar problems and any solutions?
