OK Allen, you're a very good English teacher, but it was 4am and I had just spend the night finishing some leftover work. After a full night's rest I'll go head to head against you in terms of intelligence, wit, and capability any day of the week.

The slowdowns I was referring to are no longer present due to a design change (hack) in recent versions. Compiz now employs an old trick taken from the early years of Windows when positioning windows was a serious drain on slower PCs. Previously, when not using desktop composition, windows were resized in real time. Now, they use a semi-transparent square to represent the new window size after the mouse button is released.

Another weakness is Vsync and Full screen applications, as I just proved to a colleague of mine. While you can enable Vsync, it only synchronizes Compiz itself, not any other application running under it. For applications that look best with vertical synchronization such as MAME, you won't see any tearing while moving the window but the display itself still isn't waiting for the screen to be refreshed. Even worse, switching the Full screen mode caused the window to pop in and out of full screen ever 2 seconds. Pathetic. Just another X weakness, which is being pushed to do things it was never intended for.

Oh, just a little FYI for you Allen, it's never proper to start a sentence using "And". You can sit down now.

I also have used Compiz Fusion, on ubuntu 8.04 , more recently with two monitors (nvidia twinview, xinerama style) and it works flawlessly.

Have used it since 8.04 came out (single monitor) also without a crash.

BTW. That's on a GeForce FX 5200 with 64MB/64bit, Athlon XP 2800+, 1GB, not really a rocket.

“If you use Compiz and you haven’t had a single crash or other anomoly, you either haven’t used it, or your lying. The later being more likely.”

me too havent used it. i dotn need it my mobo gfx card doesnt support it. plus aint interested in bringing a voip server grid down. with so much GPU load? i need to tradeoff? graphics or performance? i chose performance over grpahics.

"If you use Compiz and you haven’t had a single crash or other anomoly, you either haven’t used it, or your lying. The later being more likely."

*You're*, and *latter*. and by the way, that last sentence is uncalled for. That was just a grossly sexist comment, and I don't think this is what this discussion calls for.
And yes, wobbly windows is pretty useless, but think of why it's even available. Check the iPhone vs. Windows Mobile, and we can easily argue that the iPhone has better eye-candy, but WM has better usage. But its the eye-candy that sells the iPhone, so that obviously means people want it and appreciate it. So Compiz does have a lot of useless eye-candy, but its probably what some of the Linux community wants.

And the horrible slowdowns, I haven't experienced them. I have a 32MB ATI video radeon video card and only 512MB RAM. After using the terminal to tweak ( which i admit, did take a while), it runs flawlessly

i have a p4 3.2 almost 4 years old. runs compiz now with no problems. i have no slowdown problems at all, you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference with compiz on or off. ill admit it took me a bit of time to work it out but now its fine and doesn't crash. programs do occasionally crash in gnome but i have never linked any problems i have had back to compiz. maybe im just lucky tho. and by the way. wobbly windows sucks, its just stupid and annoying. sorry about the spelling/grammar. i cant be bothered
