Ubuntu 7.10 Beta



I am currently upgrading from my current Ubuntu Installation to Ubuntu 7.10 Beta. I hope I would still be online after the updating finishes!

Whoa. It requires a download of 1367 Megs. And it won’t resume? Looks like I am doomed!

    ya, thats a problem with these linux distros, they dont make a reliable download system with resume etc for third-rate broadband connections like we have :)

    many times while getting updates some of the files error out and i have to restart the update…

    compare that to windows-update which is very reliable (resumes etc) and it also works in the background if you have some other downloads going on, plus it continues even if you reboot in between etc…

    heh. i had to hard reboot the machine in the middle and now i have a messed up installation. it’s working but i cant access the update manager at all.

    currently downloading a regular ISO to install over my current installation. would have to restart from scratch i guess.

    Erm, in fact the update *does* resume, but it cannot handle partial files. So, if you have download 10 packages (100%) and are in the middle of downloading the 11th one when your connection goes down, you will still have the previous 10 packages when you resume. The packages are stored in /var/cache/apt/archives. You can even make a backup from there, or save some disk space by deleting old DEBs.

    BTW, Debian is working on a backend to APT that will allow you to use BitTorrent. Since BitTorrent inherently requires that partial files be supported, it’s likely that APT will come to support it too.

    well i did try resuming it. but after the reboot when i tried the update process. in fact any kind of installation process. the system would become unstable and would hang in between…

    so i decided to install it from the alternate CD which messed up grub. but all seems to be fine now.
