Citibank Telephone Spam

There was a time when I called these dudes (Citibank) asking for a bank account. But alas, I was short by around 60,000 bucks from their minimum account balance, which was an incredible Rs. 1,00,000. Today, some marketing dude from the same company contacted me on phone and enquired if I was interested in getting an interest free loan!

Two things… Where the hell did he get my telephone number? And, why the hell do they think I need a loan when they do not even consider me good enough prospect to be their bank account holder?

I asked that dude about the source from where he got my reference… he just hinted towards some friend or relative of mine who took a loan from them and referred me! Totally false… They probably bought some telephone database from some company and are just calling out of no good reasons.

Looks like Phone Spam has arrived in India. And I am already hating it…

hey as soon as i turned 18 the next day onwards i was gettin more spam calls than my dad :-P . and btw there is a case in SC about these spam calls pendin

Supreme Court case, i think, is almost decided.
The SC has issued notices to all the major Mobile companies.

Such calls are an attack on your Privacy, next time, anyone calls you tell them, about the SC decision and also add you are registering an FIR for Spamming. It is enough to scare anyone :p

the call was on the airtel phone. i am damn tired of recieving crap messages on my airtel prepaid as well. they spam SMS you. :(

phone spam sucks...here in the US we now have devices (TeleZapper) to block calls from unknown phone numbers. the gov't has also created a "do not call" list...so if you list your number on this list then you should essentially should not receive such calls anymore. Its working..but still a call or two gets through..

i got the same problem... i had bloged about it month ago.. luckly.. as ankur pointed out someone took the initiative and filed a case....

Poonam that thing to block call from unwanted no. there many addon available for phones which got symbian .. even i had installed but then .. it clocks phones from PCo also if some friend calling...

also yesterday there was a news article in mid day where by mistake there a abuse message send from airtell message center to one of their customer... who has threatened to file a case against them.. air tel as usual send a apology note ... this wont happen again

Sushubh thats Funny....;) next time ill Try that when someone call to offer billing sim or loan... once a person called up and ask me... i am talking from this cellphone company... "for security reasons would i have your name.. ? " before i guide you about this new offer

Initially it might look just another complaint, but Please Read on...

I took a personal loan from a Citibank during my stay in Chennai in 2002. The bank granted me a loan after I have duly signed all required documents. I agreed for an ECS payment to that bank for the EMIs from my HSBC Saving a/c. The bank also took 3 surety cheques of my HSBC Saving a/c from me.

I pre-closed the loan in 2004. The bank has sent me a closure letter confirming the loan is closed. And yes...the bank has also sent me a cover letter saying "Your unused post-dated cheques are enclosed".

You must say, the bank has returned my HSBC Surety cheques (which actually they should have been). But to your surprise, they have sent me cheques of another person. But then, what is the big deal?

The big deal is, the bank has taken up 3 cheques of another person altogether, forged my signatures on those cheques and sent me. What if they have deposited those cheques into the related bank with my name? I would have been arrested first and then comes the rest.... I would have been the sole sufferer for no fault of mine. The Central Crime Branch could also find very easily whose cheques have the bank taken and sent to me as those cheques which I have received belonged to some other person holding an account with SBI (Purasawalkam Branch, Chennai).

I have been following up with the bank since the last 19 months. But to no avail. None of my letters was answered. Except that on 18th Oct 2005, they have sent me a letter stating that my HSBC cheques are not traceable and the other SBI cheques in question are being investigated. More than 1 year has passed but no reply from the bank. Phone calls, letters, emails....nothing helped. Yes of course, for emails you are sure to get automated replies saying "we shall get back to you shortly". Who knows who defines the word "shortly".

I tried filing a complaint with the police station that comes under the required jurisdiction but probably due to technical reasons the complaint could not be accepted. I did not loose hope.

I went to the Central Crime Branch. I met the Commissioner of Police. The complaint is now lying with the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for further investigation. Also, once the complaint has been accepted by the CCB, senior officials of the bank started even visiting me personally to settle the matter. I got calls from various Citibank officials whose name and numbers are all noted and can be provided. I have received enourmous calls from the bank's top officials, once I informed them about getting the news published in the newspaper.

I am being asked if I have had any monetary loss. The question is not of monetary loss but my signatures forged that too in somebody else's cheque (how can you say it is not intentional) and enough evidence is there. In fact, in my presence at Central Crime Branch, Mr. Anjan Manikonda, Citibank VP (South) was called up by ACP and few officials from Citibank did visit to meet the ACP.

Please send me a mail, for copies of letters from the bank and the scanned copies of the cheques which Citibank has sent to me.

Ms. Anjana Makkar, Mr. Munish Sharda and Mr. Harshal Shah of Citibank India have been in touch with me ever since I have lodged the complaint with CCB (Not before that of course). Ms. Anjana Makkar has also personally visited ICRPC ( www.icrpc.org) where I have had a talk with her over the phone at ICRPC contact number. I must say, Mr. Arun Saxena, President, ICRPC is doing excellent jobs helping the common man like me.

I am determined to take them for a ride for this kind of activities. Apart from Criminal case, a case is being filed at consumers' redressal forum for which ICRPC has already extended its help.

Myself deepak sahu and my card no. is 5546 1989 7154 5019 company send me offer for top up of loan and in this regard i continuesly call to citibank executive from April23rd to Till date but all executive name r Ms. Parul, my Simpy r giving me wrong information. When i talk with Ms Priyanka she is Ex Quality manager Chennai her neplay is so nagtive ans she is so duffer. I think citibank is 0 in customer staisfacton.

I work night shifts ..and everyday during the day i get atleast 4-5 calls from various banks asking me if i need a loan,insurance,credit card ..this is annoying and it really disturbs my sleep .I wonder how my number gets circulated to all these banks and agencies ? is their a way that we can ask these guys to put us on the do not call list ?
