The tipping culture in India
I am not sure if it even exists. Though we do leave tips when we eat at a restaurant.
The international standard I believe is that you leave a tip between 10%-20% of the billing amount.
I tend to leave around 20% on smaller bills and around 10% on bigger ones.
But the newest funda in some restaurants in Gurgaon is pretty amazing. Two of my friends have noticed that they did not get the exact change for their bill payment at two different restaurants. One is the Om Sweets in Sector 14 and the other is the Coco Palm at DLF Galleria.
No inquiry was made at the second instance but on checking with the waiter at OM, the response was that the waiter had deducted the tip at the billing counter.
Surprised? I am practically shocked. Considering it is my decision to whether to leave a tip or not. No matter how impolite it might look like if I did not leave one at the counter.
If I do not get the service I expected from the individual who is serving me, I am not going to give any tip.

Happened with me as well at Om Sweets. The waiters deducted their tip without my consent!

So, what exactly is the proper way to tip in India? Does a sweet shop really expect a tip?

I don’t have any issues in giving tip; twenty..thirty or even fifty as long as I give it of my own consent. It’s rude to extract tip on bad service. You might as well raise your costs.
