acha rahega. Get a core 2 duo based notebook :) Notebooks improve productivity and personally I wont ever switch to a desktop for every day use. I cannot stand the fear of power cuts ruining your un-saved work and ..... Since you have been so keen to use mac in the past, you can also ponder over the Macbook. The new Macbook cost arond 65k and feature a variant of core 2 duo t7200 mobile processor. I don't think they have made their way to this side of the shore, yet but they soon will.

Core 2 duo's are really great, if you want to continue with a desktop getting an e6300 with any 965 based board would be your best bet. It won't be too costly too.

well, my laptop died yesterday! if i cant get it repaired, thinking about getting a core2duo laptop myself (with 17" 1920x1200 display) either a Dell XPS or Sony Vaio :-)

are there any laptops (assembled?) which are available without any OS and large screen 17in out here?

The only XPS available in india is the 12" M1210. You wont get the flag-ship 17" XPS M1710 in India. If you are from India, you can look at Inspiron 9400 from Dell - it offers 1920x1200 res. with an option for core 2 duo and Go7900 GPU.

You can get VBI laptop from Redington India. They come without any OS, so are kinda good from VFM point. If you want their specs and pricelist, let me know.

i am using cousin's thinkpad since last week. ok its an old p3 256meg but i dont think i can be as productive on it as i can be on a desktop. plus i need tons of hard disk space. :(

The p3-m thinkpad is quite outdated and there is no real joy in working on a 4-5 yr old laptop with equally dated config. But things surely have changed for the good. you get bigger screen's now and they have better resolutions. Moreover, they are faster. Once you start using a laptop, u get the hang of it. Use an external mouse if you are not currently, on the thinkpad.

As for hard disk space 80-100GB is a norm in laptops. If you want additional storage, there are external hard-drives and built-in dvd rw on almost all laptops to rely on :)

Its you call really, but I just say that laptop can really be the thing u are looking for. The powercuts, travels, ...

the one i am using has a 15" screen and i am using an external mouse. i hate the absense of the window key...

anyways... i will see what i can do. a laptop is seriously not what i am looking at here. i could have gone for the mac mini or a macbook. but they are seriously priced like shit here in india.

Hey man. Sorry for the loss of your laptop. That's sad.

As for my recommendation, I would go for nothing but a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. I bought a Macbook when visiting the US lately and love it. It's got a 1.8Ghz Core Duo and it is blazing fast. Much too expensive, but I will never willingly go back to a Windows based work or home computer.

Can you not get Macbook in Delhi these days? What about the Apple store in Green Park?

Hey, those are retail prices. You get it for a whole lot less from Apple resellers/dealers. Try getting in touch with one of them, no harm in it.

And yes, I don't get why they didn't have the Windows key on thinkpads. My uncle has a thinkpad too and I must admit it was a nightmare working on it bcoz you are so used to 'that' key.

Core 2 duo, all the way. Get a desktop man... you can at least mod/upgrade the shit out of it, and it don'r heat up as much. A core 2 duo based laptop is fire.
