Side effects of being an Opera evangelist
It was a normal routine day. I was surfing around and just having a nice time online. And as usual I was sitting in the Opera IRC chat rooms. And I saw this Indian name. It used to be pretty uncommon till sometime back but as usual I just gave that name a buzz. The name was Harish; he worked in a small startup with big plans for the future. He found me so interesting that he introduced me to one of the bosses. We chatted a bit and voila 5 days later, I got a phone call from another one of the partners in the same company at 11 pm. And as a result of that phone call, I was in Hyderabad 2 days later, and I am still in Hyderabad 4 days later and since I don’t have a confirmed ticket (even a ticket on a waiting list seat), I am not sure how long I am going to stay here in Hyderabad. Its not that I am tired or bored or frustrated or anything and I want to go back to my maa and her paranthas and raajma chawal, in fact its fun to be here watching some work actually being done and that too in a fun environment! Some people in India do work on Linux full time and some offices find it pretty tough to find some windows machine lying around! A company that ask for people with a liking for open source initiative and Linux. Yeah, I found one such rare company. And they are for some strange reasons interested in me. And they have given me some assignments which I tried to do to the best of my capacity, but the leftovers of the mess that I am after being tortured and mentally ***** during the last few years of my terrible jobs have not left me competent enough to do something innovative that I can be proud off. But still, it’s an opportunity I doubt I will get ever again. It’s an opportunity that can become a shining star in my resume (or a dull spot, only time can tell). And it’s an opportunity to work in a company (as I have said before) I would have preferred to start out as an IT field guy.
But I did what I could have done. And I don’t have any big expectations from my performance. So I am not afraid. The job would need me to leave home for long durations of time which would be a totally pain in the ass. I would have to do stuff I have never done before (no not those kind of stuff, but actually washing cloths and arranging for food myself etc.). And it would mean a totally different lifestyle in a city that is totally new to me and has a third and very prominent language as Telugu! So, the coming days are going to be pretty confusing and maybe heartbreaking…
The Fun Part: I just remembered from the Telugu mention… I am currently residing in the Office Guest House of the company which is located in the top 2 floors owned by a very famous telugu (that is what people have told me! Not that I am a big Telugu movie watcher) cinematographer. And another one of the company’s partner has actually worked in Telugu movies! And he is a pretty close relative of a huge Telugu star I had rather not mention here for the fear of search engine hits to this post!
Cool? Yeah, it is…
