Death of Lal Bahadur Shastri

Disclaimer: I want to clarify one thing here. I am not claiming anything. I am just amused at what I have heard. If anyone finds this blog post offensive in anyway, feel free to contact me.

The kinds of topics my dad and me end up talking are pretty weird. Today was the turn of Indira Gandhi. It started with dad reading a particular piece of fact on one of the channel tickers. It said that eight US Presidents have died while in office out of whom four were assassinated. He called me and wanted to know about those four guys. My information was limited to Abraham Lincoln and J.F. Kennedy (I am not sure though). This raised the similar question about our head of the states.

The only example that came to my mind was Lal Bahadur Shastri. He is one of the few Indian Prime Ministers who actually impress me with their deeds. I have read little about him, but whatever I have read tells me that he is the kind of PM India needs today. To tackle Pakistan and to tackle other problems we face.

And when you are talking about Lal Bahadur Shastri, you cannot avoid talking about his death under mysterious conditions. We defeated Pakistan, we went to Russia in Tashkent to discuss Ceasefire, and what we got in return was a dead Prime Minister. It was a war where we totally torn apart Pakistan’s morale but the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri changed a lot. Indira came to power and as far as I know, hell broke loose. No one talks about it in media, but Indira is practically considered one of the chief conspirer in Shastri’s death. It is lack of information on things like these that makes me want to dive into history books. And maybe I will. What if Shastri had stayed on? I guess India would have been a very different nation with perhaps no tension of Pakistan hovering around.

Something that could have affected even more considering the money spent on the defense budget could have gone into better areas. But well, history is as cruel as present is and we have to live with what we have. And Mr. Manmohan Singh with his funny cabinet containing Laloo Prasad Yadav and the likes is what we have…

And as dad said, we talk only good stuff about dead people. Happened with Indira Gandhi and happening with Veerappan!

hi i totally agree with you on the point that indira conspired the murder i also want to know about sanjay gandhi and if there is some mystry in his death

  4. Ganesh says:

absolutely..it was indira who killed shastri..i also have heard of rumours that the witch had also conspired her own son’s death..sanjay gandhi was on a rise in late 1970s and she wanted all power to herself..so she got rid of him in wat was termed as a plane crash..but if it is really true, indira gandhi-as richard nixon has told-is AN OLD WITCH..

  5. blitz says:

actually shastri wanted to send indira gandhi to england as the new high commissioner (this is said in a recent book by one of the secretaries of cabinet level ) may that was a reason……..

  6. Willy says:

Well, I heard something different. I was told by my friend that CIA was behind Shastri’s murder. I donno how true this might be, but I dont deny the fact completely either.

  8. Manikanth says:

Mystery surrounds Shastri’s death due to several reasons — foremost being the absence of a proper medical report stating the cause of death. It is all the more puzzling because Shastri’s personal physician had accompanied him to Tashkent, then in the USSR. But he did not ensure a proper medical investigation. It is rumoured that he was drunk at that time. Though a post-mortem report was given by the Soviet authorities at Tashkent, nothing was done in India to determine the exact cause of the Prime Minister’s death despite tell-tale signs of poisoning.

It was very baffling indeed why such indifference was shown when three Cabinet Ministers — Jagjivan Ram, YB Chavan and Swarn Singh — were present in January 1966 at Tashkent, where Shastri breathed his last.

According to the Soviet sources, a glass of milk was bought for Shastri by personal servant of Indian Ambassador TN Kaul. This personal servant, Jan Mohammad, was never questioned or interrogated by any one in the Soviet Union or in India despite his being the prime suspect. This is indeed mystifying, because just after consuming milk Shastri complained of “pain in the chest” and “difficulty in breathing.” Thereafter the Prime Minister slipped into coma. The Soviet doctors were called in and they pronounced him dead

Its very shocking that India didn’t react or do anything even when its prime minister is poisened and killed mysteriously. Its a shame for the government of that time and the people who never raised their voice over such a major injustice ! Its a shame for all of us that we dont even know about a prime minister who has given a status to India in international arena after independence !!

I agree with you… there is some doubt on congress leaders who wanted to continue thir family rule. And our weak leadership (chamchas of family rulers) are completely bend and that saga continuing still today….

    • Tarun says:

I have the same opinion but it can not be ignored that Bahadur’s popularity at that time was becoming a problem for indira gandhi. Moreover if we think from investigating point of view, than the only Beneficiary of Lal Bahadur’s Death is she only. So i think it was all well planned by her only. That’s why all the facts were buried. But it is universal truth that Truth always reveals. Gandhi family always destructed our country and still they r doing. But i am surprised why people dont understand. I don’t belong to any political group or sangh. I’m an independent thinker so do think my thoughts r biased.

I truly feel there is a conspiracy behind Shashtriji’s death. We need to find the same. We cannot have some dum headed politicians do whatever they want and at the crisis time hide themselves in embassies. This is a very good site, if you come across something please mail me. Thanks

I truly belive this. the reason is ussr wanted a government which could use and abuse during cold war. what respected lal bahadur wanted to remain neutral which was against soviet interest. as india is major country in south asia

  14. Hi Subhash.
It gives me very strong feeling that some people are still awaiting and searching the truth behind the death of Mr. Shastri. Well, I don’t know what is the truth but i surely says that why it (the reason of the death of Mr. shastri) does not came in light. Why media does not raise this issue.
Because after the long ruling period of Congress. and you know the mentality of Congress-(just support the minority and gather the vote).

I think Mr. Shastri was little bit inspired of the agenda of Hinduism(however he wanted to see his country developed). And due to this agenda, he was getting strong support. Indira Gandhi cannot bear this and Mr. Shastri became victim of Indira’s conspiracy.

due to long ruling period of Congress, the mentality of Congress become very broad. Most of the people having mentality of Congress now are in the Government Sector, Social Sector and also majorly-strongly in
Media-Industry. Thats why they (Media) donot raise this issue. And now due to very long period passed away peoples have forgotten the death of Mr. Shastri. And now new generation is not aware about the death of Mr. Shastri.
But Subhash its only my point of view. It can be wrong unless the truth does not come out. You are working on this issue, it makes me happy. If you find some more news regarding this issue please must send me.

Not only Lal Bahadur Shastri, but also the true Patriot “Netaji“. If “Satyameva Jayathe” is true… It will emerge out. KGB, Indira, India has to answer

Netaji“. If “Satyameva Jayathe” is true… It will emerge out. KGB, Indira, India has to answer

  17. Jai Jawan Jai Kisan!

First It was Netaji who was mysteriously disposed off!

Gandhi ji had strong differences with Nehru on development strategy

Shastri ji was mysteriously found dead

Gulzari Lal Nanda was simply used as a ladder to the PM post!

    Kamraj was ditched.

All Congress seniors were sidelined and a durbar culture was formented for Indira mata!

She openly murdered democracy in 1975 She has Sikhs murdered in 1984

Little wonder she would have murdered Shastri ji!

  18. Raj Kumar says:

The Nehru clan enslaved free india with the hypnotic wand of Samajwaad
which made the poor even more poorer

Congress and indira never called for any independant inquiry into Shastriji’s death

Little surprise Indira hand the handle and remote control to get rid of Sastri ji to amitiuously grab the PM’s gaddi

We never forget this great leader.

    Jai Hind!

  19. The Bharat we dream of would have been different if this man were alive

If a full enquiry is conducted many Congress heads would roll.

We miss this little great man very much

  20. I am the least surprised that Indira Gandhi’s name is taken .She was overtly ambitious about power.

Well Indians have lost a great leader

  21. Shastry ji was simply great

His charisma and sinplicity were worthy of emulation.

  22. We mis Shastri ji very much .The school I attended was named in his honour.

Yeas he was found dead mysyeriously .Even Dr Chugh was later on liquidated why?All this makes us very suspicious.

Well Indira is not there to answer ther charges. But we people are not fools!

It cud very well be America’s doing. Pakistan is important to US and after screwing up Pakistan big time, America must’ve felt the heat and put CIA in action to take care of “things” before Pakistan ceased to exist.

  33. Pragati says:

It is indeed mysterious that the 3 best men of India:
    1. Shastri Ji
    2. Netaji
    3. Homi Jehangir Bhabha
all died in air crashes outside India……..All 3 were needed for India’s Rise….
    Is it conspiricy or fate?

  34. Sanjeev says:

This has never been reported in the Indian media as far as I know. Nor in American media for that matter. Don’t know why as this is definitely newsworthy.

Maybe ’cause I am the only bore who watches Book TV, of all things, at night.

Here is the extract of the full trascript from the scribe.

SR: Ted, your book is called “Nation of Secrets.” I want to ask you about some of the journalistic dimensions of this because you teach journalism as well as being an investigative reporter yourself. …There are some things in this book that people don’t know about.

TG: There are a number of things that are unknown, that I stumbled upon. One of them… and some of these are obscure and historical and some are not …one of them involves a covert operation the CIA ran back in the ‘60’s in India which may have had a profound effect on the government of India. It went awry and I won’t go into all the details… but a Prime Minister named Shastri died suddenly. A covert operative tells me that he fears that this covert operation than went awry may have contributed to the death of the prime minister. Which, if true, is extraordinary.

  35. Sanjeev says:

ps- ms.pragati, shastriji didnt die of a plane crash …. as for homi bhabha he made a mistake of presenting a paper to americans regarding his theory of macro scale satellite controlled EMP (Electro magnetic pulse) which perhaps led to his assasination by CIA since India was a Cold War foe and such weapon could give alot of levrage to americans and they didnt want it to fall in hands of russians .

  36. narendra kumar says:

India would have diggerent had shastri ji were alive.Economic growth was going well under Shastri jivas he was magnanimous to accomodate liberal policies.

Under Indira India.s growth rate was one of thre lowest in the world not to talk of corruption in samajwaad syndrome, durbar culture and hero(heroine) woprship of Indira by sycophants.

  49. Rajiv says:

    Dear Friends,
We’ll have to search the intelligence files for finding out about the death of Lal Bahadur Shashtri. His death only helped Indira to come to power and also the sycophancy and corruption of Congress Party to go on smoothly.I have definite information that when Shashtriji dies he showed clear signs of poisoning. Why did Congress not investigate the case properly? The reasons are very obvious but we Indians are afraid of asking right questions at the right time. Can’t we create a site, to launch a campaign for finding truth and defeating corrupt parties?

  50. Piyush says:

    1. The then Soviet Union has given certain jobs to the Defence Chief at Tashkent as written by him in his diary. (To make a country’s head of the state some women).
    2. Lal Bahadur Shastry had no any physical problem then why he can die a sudden death?
    3. During Lal Bahadur Shastry’s reign, USSR got very little / no business from India in sale of their machineries/arms/etc.
    4. After the death of Lal Bahadur Shastry, Indira Gandhi made a very good move to give a lot of orders with USSR like her father had. We purchase a lot from Russia.

i have heard weird things about the congress propaganda , every time some big leader emerge out from a non congress league he is removed from the political stream due to unexplained consequences.
Could this be a deeper then it looks from shore? , well it might be. I am not sure though , it can not be explained until researched and questioned from the authorities that are still available of that time.

  55. Debasish Bhattacharjee says:

Oh! its exciting! So many people are concerned about our beloved Hero – Late Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death. Eminent Journalist Kuldip Nayar knows everything. He has been made silent. Wife of Shastriji also knows. Jagajiwal Ram, SB Chavan and Swarn Singh also knew. But the people of India don’t know.

The reasons for his mysterious death is given underneath – Read chronologically -
    1. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was inside a jail in USSR (He died in 1976)
    2. USSR was threatening Jawaharlal of Netaji’s release if business not done with them.
    3. USSR made good business relation with India showing Netaji inside jail.
    4. Jawarlal died and Lal Bahadur Shastri became Indian PM
    5. USSR can’t threaten him because if Shastri knows about Netaji, he will tell to release Netaji and welcome him.
    6. USSR wanted somebody in power who can be threatened and utilized.
    7. Indira Gandhi was consulted by Sr. Defence Official (He wrote in Diary)
    8. In Tashkent (USSR), Shastri was given poison in the milk.
    9. He went to Coma and died.
    10. There was no inquiry / committee given to check the whole thing.
    11. Media was made silent.
    12. Indira gandhi came into power.
    13. USSR had good business thereafter.

That was in my childhood that I happened to read it, lostit later. You might find answers if you could grab a copy of this story

was indira gandhi responsible for sanjay's death?

  66. arunav says:

INTERESTING HISTORY! At the very beginning of his book, "The Nehru Dynasty", astrologer K.N.Rao mentions the names of Jawaharlal's father and grandfather. Jawahar Lal's father was believed to be Motilal and Motilal's father was one Gangadhar Nehru. And we all know that Jawaharlal's only daughter was Indira Priyadarshini Nehru; Kamala Nehru was her mother, who died in Switzerland of tuberculosis. She was totally against Indira's proposed marriage with Feroze. Why? No one tells us that! Now, who is this Feroze? We are told by many that he was the son of the family grocer. The grocer supplied wines, etc. to Anand Bhavan (previously known as Ishrat Manzil) What was the family grocer's name? One frequently hears that Rajiv Gandhi's grandfather was Pandit Nehru. But then we all know that everyone has two grandfathers, the paternal and the maternal grandfathers. In fact, the paternal grandfather is deemed to be the more important grandfather in most societies.

Why is it then, no where, we find Rajiv Gandhi's paternal grandfather's name? It appears that the reason is simply this. Rajiv Gandhi's paternal grandfather was a Muslim gentleman from the Junagadh area of Gujarat. This Muslim grocer by the name of Nawab Khan, had married a Parsi woman after converting her to Islam. This is the source where from the myth of Rajiv being a Parsi was derived. Rajiv's father Feroze, was Feroze Khan before he married Indira, against Kamala Nehru's wishes. Feroze's mother's family name was Ghandy, often associated with Parsis and this was changed to Gandhi, sometime before his wedding with Indira, by an affidavit. The fact of the matter is that (and this fact can be found in many writings) Indira was very lonely. Chased out of the Shantiniketan University by Guru Dev Rabindranath himself for misdemeanor, the lonely girl was all by herself, while father Jawahar was busy with politics, pretty women and illicit sex; the mother was in hospital. Feroze Khan, the grocer's son was then in England and he was quite sympathetic to Indira and soon enough she changed her religion, became a Muslim woman and married Feroze Khan in a London mosque.

  67. arunav says:

Nehru was not happy; Kamala was dead already or dying. The news of this marriage eventually reached Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (better known as Mahatma Gandhi). Gandhi urgently called Nehru and practically ordered him to ask the young man to change his name from Khan to Gandhi. It had nothing to do with change of religion, from Islam to Hinduism for instance. It was just a case of a change of name by an affidavit. And so Feroze Khan became Feroze Gandhi. The surprising thing is that the apostle of truth, the old man soon to be declared India's Mahatma and the 'Father of the Nation' didn't mention this game of his in the famous book, 'My Experiments with Truth'. Why? When they returned to India, amock 'Vedic marriage' was instituted for public consumption. On this subject, writes M.O. Mathai (a longtime Private Secretary of Nehru) in his renowned (but now suppressed by the GOI! ) 'Reminiscences of the Nehru Age' on page94, second paragraph: "For some inexplicable reason, Nehru allowed the marriage to be performed according to Vedic rites in 1942. An inter-religious and inter-caste marriage under Vedic rites at that time was not valid in law. To be legal, it had to be a civil marriage."

It's a known fact that after Rajiv's birth Indira and Feroze lived separately, but they were not divorced. Feroze used to harass Nehru frequently for money and also interfere in Nehru's political activities. Nehru got fed up and left instructions not to allow him into the Prime Minister's residence Trimurthi Bhavan. Mathai writes that the death of Feroze came as a relief to Nehru and Indira. The death of Feroze in 1960 before he could consolidate his own political forces, is itself a mystery. Feroze had even planned to remarry. Those who try to keep tabs on our leaders in spite of all the suppressions and deliberate misinformation, are aware of the fact that the second son of Indira (or Mrs.Feroze Khan) known as Sanjay Gandhi was not the son of Feroze. He was the son of another Muslim gentleman, Mohammad Yunus. Here, in passing, we might mention that the second son was originally named Sanjiv. It rhymed with Rajiv, the elder brother's name. It was changed to Sanjay when he was arrested by the British police in England and his passport impounded, for having stolen a car. Krishna Menon was then India's High Commissioner in London. He offered to issue another passport to the felon who changed his name to Sanjay.

Incidentally, Sanjay's marriage with the Sikh girl Menaka (now they call her Maneka for Indira Gandhi found the name of mythological Lord Indra's Court dancer rather offensive !!) took place quite surprisingly in Mohammad Yunus's house in New Delhi. And the marriage with Menaka who was a model (She had model for Bombay Dyeing wearing just a towel) was not so ordinary either. Sanjay was notorious in getting unwed young women pregnant. Menaka too was rendered pregnant by Sanjay. It was then that her father,Colonel Anand, threatened Sanjay with dire consequences if he did not marry her daughter. And that did the trick. Sanjay married Menaka. It was widely reported in Delhi at the time that Mohammad Yunus was unhappy at the marriage of Sanjay with Menaka. Apparently he had wanted to get him married with a Muslim girl of his choice. It was Mohammad Yunus who cried the most when Sanjay died in the plane accident.

In Yunus's book, 'Persons, Passions & Politics' one discovers that baby Sanjay had been circumcised following Islamic custom, although the reason stated was phimosis. It was always believed that Sanjay used to blackmail Indira Gandhi and due to this she used to turn a blind eye when Sanjay Gandhi started to run the country as though it were his personal freedom. Was he black mailing her with the secret of who his real father was? When the news of Sanjay's death reached Indira Gandhi, the first thing she wanted to know was about the bunch of keys which Sanjay had with him.

Nehru was no less a player in producing bastards. At least one case is very graphically described by M.O. Mathai in his "Reminiscences of the NehruAge", page 206. Mathai writes: "In the autumn of 1948 a young woman from Benares arrived in New Delhi as a sanyasini named Shraddha Mata (an assumed and not a real name). She was a Sanskrit scholar well versed in the ancient Indian scriptures and mythology. People, including MPs, thronged to her to hear her discourses. One day S.D. Upadhyaya, Nehru's old employee, brought a letter in Hindi from Shraddha Mata. Nehru gave her an interview in the PM's house. As she departed, I noticed (Mathai is speaking here) that she was young, shapely and beautiful. Meetings of Nehru with her became rather frequent, mostly after he finished his work at night. During one of Nehru's visits to Lucknow, Shraddha Mata turned up there and Upadhyaya brought a letter from her as usual. Nehru sent her the reply and she visited Nehru at midnight…“ Suddenly Shraddha Mata disappeared.

In November 1949 a convent in Bangalore sent a decent looking person to Delhi with a bundle of letters. He said that a young woman from northern India arrived at the convent a few months ago and gave birth to a baby boy. She refused to divulge her name or give any particulars about herself. She left the convent as soon as she was well enough to move out but left the child behind. She however forgot to take with her a small cloth bundle in which, among other things, several letters in Hindi were found. The Mother Superior, who was a foreigner, had the letters examined and was told they were from the Prime Minister. The person who brought the letters surrendered them…"I (Mathai) made discreet inquiries repeatedly about the boy but failed to get a clue about his hereabouts. Convents in such matters are extremely tightlipped and secretive. Had I succeeded in locating the boy, I would have adopted him. He must have grown up as a Catholic Christian blissfully ignorant of who his father was."
Coming back to Rajiv Gandhi, we all know now that he changed his so called Parsi religion to become a Catholic to marry Sania Maino of Turin, Italy. Rajiv became Roberto. His daughter's name is Bianca and son's name is Raul. Quite cleverly the same names are presented to the people of India as Priyanka and Rahul. What is amazing is the extent of our people's ignorance in such matters. The press conference that Rajiv Gandhi gave in London after taking over as Prime minister of India was very informative. In this press conference, Rajiv boasted that he was NOT a Hindu but a Parsi. Mind you, speaking of the Parsi religion, he had no Parsi ancestor at all. His grandmother (father's mother) had turned Muslim after having abandoned the Parsi religion to marry Nawab Khan.

It is the western press that waged a blitz of misinformation on behalf of Rajiv. From the New York Times to the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post, the big guns raised Rajiv to heaven. The children's encyclopedias recorded that Rajiv was a qualified Mechanical Engineer from the revered University of Cambridge. No doubt US kids are among the most misinformed in the world today! The reality is that in all three years of his tenure at that University Rajiv had not passed a single exam. He had therefore to leave Cambridge without a certificate. Sonia too had the same benevolent treatment. She was stated to be a student in Cambridge. Such a description is calculated to mislead Indians. She was a student in Cambridge all right, but not of the University of Cambridge , but of one of those fly by night language schools where foreign students come to learn English. Sonia was working as an 'au pair' girl in Cambridge and trying to learn English at the same time. And surprise of surprises, Rajiv was even cremated as per Vedic rites in full view of India's public.
