Saw a Call Center

As a friend of mine is entering the Call Center business (running one not working in one!), I finally got to see a functioning Call Center. And by god, it sucked. You feel like you are sitting amongst a bunch of idiots brainwashed to say same thing again and again no matter what the person on the other side of the phone wants to listen to.

Dude, if a call center is employing people to say same things again n again, then what’s ur problem? The job demands so…..these employees r giving their services and follow certain norms where they have to greet their customers n repeat things. They have to maintain certain etiquettes…again the job demands. Each time a head constable sees a police officer of the rank of inspector he cant say hi dude ! or hi buddy. He has to greet his officer the way it has been taught to him.U cant go n greet ur teacher by saying hi sexy one day n hi jaan the next. Hope u got the point…baat karta hei..

  2. Sushubh Says:

    my problem?

they call people in UK. without their permission. at any given time. using telephone directories publicly available. that should be illegal. even in india.

  3. sameera Says:

“you feel like u r sitting amongst a bunch of idiots brainwashed to say same things again n again no matter what the person on the other side of the phone wants to listen to” (ur words)….my response was to these INSENSITIVE LINES that u’d written about call centre employees.

ur response (about ppl being called without their permission….) to my response ,I feel is out of context. Thats a different issue altogether. What I was trying to say is that we must respect others profession as much as we respect ours. Sitting and rediculing others profession is unbecoming of a gud human being.

i never said being a call center executive was a low profile job… what they do is evil. and they should be ashamed of themselves. how would you feel if some call center executives sitting in bangladesh starts calling on your home phone number randomly to sell you internet packages at the middle of the night?

i am sure you would praise them for doing a job well done.

  5. sameera Says:

please do not link issues. I have made it very clear that the way u wrote those lines certainly sounded insensitive. U cud have clearly written about ur personal experiences with the bangladesh call centre executive. Y bash all the call centres for one such bitter experience of urs? I personally know (in India)how these execuives r watched for their work n monitored constantly. Fear of being sacked is invariably hunting them.No reputed call centre executive wud ever dream of doing something which wud threaten his/her daal roti.

  6. Sushubh Says:

no idea what gave you the idea of me being a sensitive guy.

  7. sameera Says:

may be the way u put things. Anyways…chill.

  8. Sushubh Says:

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh…

  9. Libbu Says:

Letk me just say, I worked in a call center once. And I will agree with Sushubh on the mindless drones thing. That was possibly the worst job I’ve ever had, and I still get nightmares about it.

  10. Sushubh Says:

    umm hmm.

  11. Melantrys Says:

    *pats Sushubh*

I agree both on the helpless drone thing and on the unqualified “linking of different issues”.

Every damn call center call we get here at home is meant to fraud - yes FRAUD - us out of our money (”lotteries, cell phone contracts without any clear conditions, you name it…), so it’s totally fine by me to talk bad about the employees as well (saving Libbu’s presence possibly :) )

  12. Sushubh Says:

    ah some support!

i myself am tired of getting phone calls from citibank. they refused to open a savings account for me once and now they want to give me interest free loans!

how could i trust them? i cant. and i wont. and i hate call center people calling me at weird times of the day.

  13. Melantrys Says:

I hate them calling my father, cos he sometimes falls for that crap, like the “lottery” thing. :S

Looks like you went to my blog, eh? Bored you away with my endless babbling over there? :D

Hm, 1:25 am; you should really go to bed. ;) It’s 3 hours earlier where I am, and I need some dinner now. (/spam)

  14. Sushubh Says:

    :)

it’s always interesting to see what people blog abt who actually sometimes land on your own blog…

well, i prefer to sleep during the day time. working at nights is more interesting considering its more peaceful too.

  15. Melantrys Says:

Well, blame Frenzie for having me here. :P
(And read of our fascinating trip to Brussels on both our blogs. :) )

Maaaah, I have to go to work in 9 hours!

P.S.: I just realized I wrote “helpless drone” up there instead of “mindless…”. Do I need a new brain, I wonder…..?

    Good night. :)

Everybody has to hustle to make a living.
In my world I would rather annoy you than go hungry!! exaggeration say not have my bike and mobile.
Incidentally all call centres do not call people at the middle of the night. Only few.
Mostly they reply to people about product problems or give info about products.

  17. Sushubh Says:

i am fine with call centers where i call to get answers to my questions.

but the problem is that 90% of my calls to such call centers (icici, hutch, aitel) goes unanswered. but airtel people manage to call me at all the wrong times… especially when i am in roaming!

  18. Mr.Subramanyam Chary Says:

    Hi People,

well I am no where connected with call centre or employees working with call centre, my aunt is having account with ICICI the I have many times visited n no fo branches for account related queries with my aunt, surprisingly no body in branches show any respect or help the customer, they simply give call centre no to call my aunt has ac in himayatnagar br of hyd the no for helpline is 040-23128000, with frustration my aunt gave a call to them, but u know they r like gems in their work, they are so patient, and give their ears to customer, employees of hyd call centre are so perfect in their products they have, I am so touched with the services it forced me to open a savings a/c. they have proved that they are “hum hain na”, hats of to this employees, I believe i will also get the same support, for any account queries u can call them 24 hrs as they are at your service,

ALL THE BEST MR.KAMATH, I must say you r branches needs training from this call centre employees, the main purpose of your bank having success is it is standing with old pillars, hence old is gold.

    Regards
    Mr.Subramanyam Chary

    This is funny :)

  20. Harish Acharya Says:

Call Centers are bringing in millions to this country and contributing to making us an economic superpower. India is now the 12th wealthiest country. Don’t you remember the days in school when the Social Studies would say India is the 7th poorest country (or whatever) and all of us would giggle?

I think I can put up with one more phone call, provided the call center sweetie does not expect me to listen!!!

  21. Sushubh Says:

how many people are actually getting rich from this money? is it adding to the intellectual power of the country?

it’s just cheap pathetic job work.

  22. Call Centers Suck Says:

I agree with what he said, I worked in a Call Centre, and I felt like a brainwashed zombie to the point where I would be constantly speaking in my “call centre” manner with even friends + family….I swear that job takes away your ability to think for yourself….

    end rant/

  23. Kate Says:

Talbots is the worst call center of them all. 90 days of phone monitoring and being graded! If you get one or 2 words out of order on the script you get a failing grade. I wanted to shoot myself in the head every time I walked in there. They monitored everything, email, calls EVERYTHING! I think they have cameras in the bathroom! They’ve had a training class every week for the past 3 months. Most don’t even make it out. Others get up and go to lunch and never come back. Talbots prides itself on quality but what they don’t even think about is that they have A HORRIBLE REPUTATION IN THE COMMUNITY FOR A WORKPLACE!

  24. Dipankar Says:

Nice comments but I need to survive. To survive I need cash. No other jobs pay me that much as a call center gives as I am a graduate without any other qualification. Can u suggest me another job that pays me the same or above?

  25. Sushubh Says:

maybe you can get some real qualification. being lazy is not going to help ya.

  26. horton Says:

have any of you moron’s heard of “hubbert’s peak” and know the effect that will have on the whole moronic call centre business? once the price of oil jumps to $100+ a barrel and roaming blackouts become the norm, the whole industry will fold like a house of cards. get a copy of james howard kunstler’s “the long emergency” or kenneth duffeyes “twilight in the desert” and get a @#! clue you airheads!

  27. anonymous_chicken_coward Says:

voip developer, worked in a call center to check how to make one work when i am done with development in voip. asterisk and yate and openser and shytes. dude. look there are 2 sides of a coin. heads and tails. you gotta live with both. one is useless without the other. both are needed else absurd chaos. and just think how wierd will the industry be w/o support. those grown up 40+ muscular males doesnt know how to wipe ass after they shit?
yeah call center aka tech support is important, imagine you dial 100 and no cops pick up calls to assist you and you get a shot baam baam, or you end up with an accident and no one picks up and you get dead dead.
accept the fact. good and bad both are needed. just dont be a fucked up cock, just accepting the nice shit always. accept the bad also at times for a change. agreed the call center industry needs a lot of improvement. and besides in US you get 25 US$/hour for customer based call center and 35-40US$/hour for enterprise based support. i give both customer and enterprise based via SSH true but hell yeah there is no harm in making in extra bucks setting up tech support. and besides people are blind, and blind people need to be told and said the same old nag again and again.
if i agree with you on this topic not on the basis of your view point on call center like/dislike or me designing and setting up call center and/or me a professional linux dev? you are trying to push in my wallet a coin which has same face on both sides. its fake. and i am not amitabh from sholay neither dharmendra. cant agree. yeah agreed its shitty, needs some development. as in india you get 8 US$/day as compared to 40 US$/hour in US. aite? weight both sides and then evaluate.
    (my view points)
